East Gippsland Rail Trail
The East Gippsland Rail Trail is a rail trail located in East Gippsland in Victoria, Australia. The trail is a popular cycling route, beginning in Bairnsdale and extending to Orbost, following the route of the former Orbost railway line. The Bairnsdale-Orbost railway was opened in 1916 to serve the agricultural and timber industry, and required numerous substantial bridges because of the nature of the terrain. Due to the decline in traffic and heavy operating costs, the line was finally closed in August 1987 and the track infrastructure removed in 1994. The shared trail is also available for walkers and recreational horseriding, however motorised vehicles are prohibited. The trail is long and passes through a variety of forest and farmland landscapes with occasional views of the Gippsland Lakes. Nowa Nowa Railway Station
Nowa Nowa railway station was a railway station on the Orbost railway line. It was opened on Monday, 10 April 1916 to serve the small town of Nowa Nowa. It closed in 1987. The station site remains just north of the realigned East Gippsland Rail Trail, which follows the route of the former rail line, with the station site itself now used as an emergency helicopter landing place. Bruthen Railway Station
Bruthen Railway Station was opened on Monday 10 April 1916, as part of the Orbost railway line. The station officially closed on Monday, 24 August 1987. The former platform remains evident at the station site, with the site remaining as part of the East Gippsland Rail Trail, which follows the route of the former rail line. The station itself is slightly to the West of the town of Bruthen. In town, the railway alignment and rail trail pass through a short tunnel below the main street, and then skirt around the southern edge of Bruthen, crossing the large Storer Bridge, and over the Tambo River, which is now sealed with boards as the rail trail surface. Mossiface Railway Station and siding was opened on Monday 10 April 1916 as part of the Orbost railway line. The station has long since closed, with the last train passing the site in 1987. The former station grounds have been preserved, and are surrounded by the small Mossiface township consisting of a few houses, farms, and facilities, including some historic hop kilns. A siding, in rail terminology, is a low-speed track section distinct from a running line or through route such as a main line, branch line, or spur.
