ETA Foods Factory
The former ETA Foods Factory is a heritage-listed building as an important Modernist industrial building in Victoria, Australia, notable for its glass curtain wall design. The building was constructed in 1957 in Braybrook, a suburb of Melbourne, on Ballarat Road. Designer The ETA factory was designed by Frederick Romberg of Grounds Romberg and Boyd for the original owner Nut Foods. The curtain wall of the administration building presented the public façade, and it became one of the most distinguished industrial buildings during the post-war period. It is notable for the elegance of the handling of the Miesian curtain wall fronting Ballarat Road with alternating bands of clear and black glass, exposed tubular steel diagonal members picked out in gold matte paint and classical colonnade implied in the regular rhythm of structural columns. Ballarat Road (in its westernmost part the Western Highway) is a major urban arterial road in the western suburbs of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. History Previously part of Western Highway, the road was bypassed as the main route through western Melbourne when the Deer Park bypass opened in 2009; the road name was devolved back to its original identity as Ballarat Road as a consequence, however, the route is still co-signed as Western Highway on older signs. Frederick Romberg
Frederick Romberg, (Friedrich Sigismund Hermann Romberg), (21 June 1913, in Tsingtao – 12 November 1992, in Melbourne), was a Swiss-trained architect who migrated to Australia in 1938, and became a leading figure in the development of Modernism in his adopted city. Romberg was best known as the "middle term" in the architectural partnership of ‘Gromboyd‘ - Grounds, Romberg and Boyd (1953-1962), as well as for some landmark apartment buildings in 1940s Melbourne. Teisutis 'Joe' Zikaras (often spelled "Tesutis") (5 July 1922 – 10 May 1991) was an Australian sculptor born in Panevėžys, Lithuania. He earned a diploma at the School of Fine Arts, Kaunas, Lithuania, where his father Juozas Zikaras, Juozas, creator of Lithuania's famous Liberty statue, was Head. The Victorian Heritage Register (VHR) lists places deemed to be of cultural heritage significance to the State of Victoria, Australia. It has statutory weight under the Heritage Act 2017.
