EDGE Design Institute Ltd. is an architecture and interior design firm founded by Gary Chang in 1994. History The studio, EDGE, was established in 1994 by Gary Chang in Hong Kong. It was then renamed to EDGE Design Institute Ltd. in 2003. Soon after the establishment, the studio had numerous notable projects including the Broadway Cinematheque in Yau Ma Tei, office for the Hong Kong Institute of Architects (HKIA) & Architects Registration Board, and the Suitcase House of the Commune by The Great Wall. EDGE’s project ACTS Rednaxela received Design For Asia Merit award from Hong Kong Design Centre and was featured in Apple TV’s Home (2020 TV series). The building model is exhibited at M+ museum of West Kowloon Cultural District. Gary Chang (architect)
Gary Chang (張智強, born 1962) is an architectural designer from Hong Kong who has designed projects throughout China, Hong Kong, Japan, the Middle East, as well as Europe. He is known for his cost effective, flexible designs which focus on spatial qualities. Chang’s designs can be categorized as modern or contemporary architecture. He is also known for his home, the Domestic Transformer, which can turn into "24 rooms" within a limited space of 32 sq.m. He is currently the Managing Director of EDGE Design Institute Ltd., the renowned company he founded in 1994. Early life and education Chang was born in 1962 and raised in Hong Kong. Broadway Cinematheque
Broadway Cinematheque () is a cinema in Yau Ma Tei, Hong Kong, run by Broadway Circuit. Located in Prosperous Garden, a public housing estate, the cinema screens a wider spectrum of films including independent and art films than other cinemas in Hong Kong. The cinema hosts four houses with 476 seats (115 normal seats + 4 wheelchair seats per house). It also has a book store, Kubrick, which specializes in books about films, and has a café adjacent to it. History Broadway Cinematheque's building was designed by Gary Chang, who founded the EDGE Design Institute in 1994. The cinema opened on 20 November 1996, the day of the Garley Building fire in the adjoining Jordan neighbourhood, and as a result business on its first day was quite poor. Rednaxela Terrace (; ) is a pedestrian-only street in Mid-Levels, Hong Kong. It is long and junctions Shelley Street to the west and Peel Street to the east. Name Although there are no official conclusions to the origin of the name, it is believed that the road was part of the property owned by a Mr. Alexander, and Rednaxela is an understandable transposition of the English name Alexander, since the Chinese language was typically written right-to-left at the time.
