Exmorra
Exmorra ( fry, Eksmoarre) is a village in Súdwest-Fryslân in the province of Friesland, the Netherlands. It had a population of around 470 in January 2017. History The village was first mentioned in 855 as Aspanmora. The etymology is unclear. Exmorra is a ''terp'' (artificial mount village) from the middle ages. The village used to be surrounded by lake and the economy was partially based on fishing. With the '' poldering'' of the lakes, it turned into an agricultural community. The Dutch Reformed Church was built in the 13th century from yellow and red bricks. The tower collapsed in 1836 in a storm and was rebuilt. The church was extensively restored between 1963 and 1966. Exmorra was home to 168 people in 1840. Before 2011, the village was part of the Wûnseradiel municipality. Overview The village has a Christian primary school. Southwest Friesland ( fy, Súdwest-Fryslân ) is a municipality in the Northern Netherlands, located in the province of Friesland. It had a population of 84,092 in August 2017. Sneek is the municipal seat. With a total area of 841.56 km2, Súdwest-Fryslân is the largest municipality by area in the Netherlands. History Súdwest-Fryslân was formed in 2011 from the old municipalities of Bolsward, Nijefurd, Sneek, Wûnseradiel and Wymbritseradiel. Wûnseradiel
Wûnseradiel () is a former municipality in the Friesland province of the northern Netherlands, at the eastern end of the ''Afsluitdijk''. The official (legal) name of the municipality is in the West Frisian language, though it is known as Wonseradeel () in Dutch. Terp
A ''terp'', also known as a ''wierde, woerd, warf, warft, werf, werve, wurt'' or ''værft'', is an artificial dwelling mound found on the North European Plain that has been created to provide safe ground during storm surges, high tides and sea or river flooding. The various terms used reflect the regional dialects of the North European region. In English sources, ''terp'' appears to be by far the most common term used. These mounds occur in the coastal parts of the Netherlands (in the provinces of Zeeland, Friesland and Groningen), in southern parts of Denmark and in the north-western parts of Germany where, before dykes were made, floodwater interfered with daily life. Lockheed Hudson
The Lockheed Hudson is a light bomber and coastal reconnaissance aircraft built by the American Lockheed Aircraft Corporation. It was initially put into service by the Royal Air Force shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War and primarily operated by it thereafter. Frisian Handball
Frisian handball ( fry, keatsen; nl, kaatsen) is a traditional Frisian sport, related to American handball and fives, that is most commonly practiced by people from the northern Dutch province of Friesland (''Fryslân''). It is believed to be one of the oldest ballgames and was an unofficial demonstration sport at the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam. The scoring is similar to tennis. The first team scoring six games wins the match. Rules The major Frisian handball tournament, called the P.C. (short for Permanent Committee), has been held in the city of Franeker since 1854 and is considered the oldest regular sports tournament in the world. Allingawier
Allingawier is a small village in Súdwest-Fryslân municipality in the Dutch province of Friesland. It is about 7 km southwest of the city of Bolsward. Allingawier is a ''terp'' village, on an artificial dwelling mound. It had a population of around 80 in January 2017. History The village was first mentioned around 1275 as Alingwere, and means "settlement of the people of Ale (person)". Allingawier was a ''terp'' (artificial living hill) village which was located on a ridge between lakes and pools. It was originally a fishing village. Allingawiere already had a church before 1000. In 1634, the church was replaced by a chapel with a new tower. In 1839, after the Doleantie (schism in the Dutch Reformed Church), the Reformed community built a little church which now serves as visitor centre for the Aldfaers Erf Route.
