Exminster Hospital
Exminster Hospital is a former mental health facility at Exminster, Devon, England. It is a Grade II* listed building. History The hospital, which was designed by Charles Fowler using a radial plan of the panopticon type, opened as the Devon County Lunatic Asylum in July 1845. It was used as military hospital during the First World War and then became known as Devon Mental Hospital in the 1920s. It was badly bombed during the Second World War and joined the National Health Service as Exminster Hospital in 1948 before becoming known as Exe Vale Hospital (Exminster Branch) in the 1970s. After the introduction of Care in the Community in the early 1980s, the hospital went into a period of decline and closed in July 1985. The main building was converted into apartments between 2001 and 2008 and is now known as Devington Park. Exminster
Exminster is a village situated on the southern edge of the City of Exeter on the western side of the Exeter ship canal and River Exe in the county of Devon, England. It is around south of the centre of Exeter, and has a population of 3,084 (census 2001), increasing to 3,368 at the 2011 census. Exminster is an ancient village associated with a Saxon minster or religious community, founded here in the 8th century. and left by King Alfred the Great to his youngest son Aethelweard in his will of 889. In the 14th century, it was the seat of the Courtenay family, the Earls of Devon. William Courtenay, who was the Archbishop of Canterbury from 1381 to 1396, was born here. ''Exminster'' is a major part of the electoral ward of Kenn Valley. Digby Hospital was a mental health facility in Digby, Devon, England. History The site was previously occupied by Digby Farm. The hospital, which was designed by Robert Stark Wilkinson using a Linear Corridor Plan layout, opened as City of Exeter Lunatic Asylum in September 1886. Digby and Sowton railway station, a station on the Avocet Line, was opened to service the hospital in 1908. The asylum became Exeter City Mental Hospital in the 1920s and joined the National Health Service as Digby Hospital in 1948 before becoming known as Exe Vale Hospital (Digby Branch) in the 1970s.
