Ex-Flame
''Ex-Flame'' is a 1930 American pre-Code drama film directed by Victor Halperin and starring Neil Hamilton, Marian Nixon, and Norman Kerry. The film is an adaptation of the 1861 Victorian novel ''East Lynne'', but is set in contemporary England. This was the first production of the Poverty Row company Liberty Pictures.Pitts p.216 The following year, a more celebrated film version of the novel was released by Fox Film. Some sources state this is a lost film. Judith Barrie (born Catherine Brown; March 1907January 9, 1991) was an American actress and model who appeared in four films from 1930 to 1932, retiring after her brief marriage to producer Edward Halperin. Biography Born Catherine Brown and raised in Sacramento, Barrie was the granddaughter of a wealthy wheat merchant in California. Her father was Fred Brown, and her mother, Eva Brown, of Lincoln, California. She had one older sister, Hermia (born 1906). Liberty Pictures
Liberty Pictures was an American film production company of the 1930s. Part of Poverty Row, the company produced low-budget B pictures. It was one of two companies controlled by the producer M.H. Hoffman along with Allied Pictures. The company produced its first film in 1930 ''Ex-Flame'', loosely based on the Victorian novel ''East Lynne''. In 1935 the company was taken over by the larger Republic Pictures.Pitts p.216 When absorbing the company, Republic adopted the symbolic motif of Liberty Pictures - the Liberty Bell ringing in Philadelphia. ''East Lynne'' is an English sensation novel of 1861 by Ellen Wood, writing as Mrs Henry Wood. A Victorian best-seller, it is remembered chiefly for its elaborate and implausible plot, centring on infidelity and double identities. There have been numerous stage and film adaptations. The much-quoted line "Gone! And never called me mother!" (variant: "Dead! Dead! And never called me mother!") does not appear in the book; both variants come from later stage adaptations. Harold Fraser (9 November 1889 – 19 January 1962), known professionally as Snub Pollard, was an Australian-born vaudevillian, who became a silent film comedian in Hollywood, popular in the 1920s. Career Born in Melbourne, Australia, on 9 November 1889, Pollard began performing with Pollard's Lilliputian Opera Company at a young age.
