Ewiges Meer
The Ewiges Meer is the largest raised bog lake in Germany, with an area of 91 hectares (0.91 km²). Its surface lies at about 8.5 metres above sea level (NN). The lake is surrounded by an extensive complex of unutilised areas, that exhibit the actual raised bog profile and, together with the lake, form the 1,180 hectare of Ewiges Meer Nature Reserve (''Ewiges Meer und Umgebung''). Location The nature reserve lies on the border of the counties of Wittmund and Aurich near the village of Eversmeer in East Frisia. It belongs to the Nenndorf Raised Bog (''Nenndorfer Hochmoor'') on the shoulder of the Oldenburg-East Frisian Geest Ridge and forms the core zone of the roughly 33-square kilometre ''Großes Moor'' bog complex near Aurich. East Frisia
East Frisia or East Friesland (german: Ostfriesland; ; stq, Aastfräislound) is a historic region in the northwest of Lower Saxony, Germany. There are 764 nature reserves in the state of Lower Saxony in north Germany, covering a total area of as at 31 December 2008. These reserves currently form about 4.72% of the land area in the state, including the coastal waters out to . Wittmund is a ''Landkreis'' (district) in the northwestern part of Lower Saxony, Germany. It is situated in East Frisia, on the North Sea coast. Neighboring districts are (from the east clockwise) Friesland, Leer and Aurich. Geography The district contains part of the Wadden Sea and of the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park. Purple Moor-grass
''Molinia caerulea'', known by the common name purple moor-grass, is a species of grass that is native to Europe, west Asia, and north Africa. It grows in locations from the lowlands up to in the Alps. Like most grasses, it grows best in acid soils, ideally pH values of between 3.5 and 5, however, it can continue to live under more extreme conditions, sometimes to as low as 2. It is common on moist heathland, bogs and moorland throughout Britain and Ireland. Introduced populations exist in northeastern and northwestern North America. The specific epithet ''caerulea'' means "deep blue" and refers to the purple spikelets.
