Evrymenes, Larissa
Evrymenes ( el, Ευρυμενές) is a former municipality in the Larissa regional unit, Thessaly, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Agia, of which it is a municipal unit. Population 1,939 (2011). The municipal unit has an area of 95.284 km 2 (36.79 sq mi). The seat of the municipality was in Stomio. It was named after the ancient city Eurymenae. Geography The municipal unit Evrymenes stretches along the Aegean Sea coast, south of the mouth of the river Pineios. It lies at the foot of the densely forested Mount Ossa. History The most important ancient cities of Magnesia in the area of the municipal unit of Evrymenes were Eurymenae (near the modern village Kokkino Nero), Homolium (''Homolion'', at Lapsokhori, near the modern village Omolio) and Rhizus (''Rhizous'', near the modern village Tarsanas). Thessaly ( el, Θεσσαλία, translit=Thessalía, ; ancient Thessalian: , ) is a traditional geographic and modern administrative region of Greece, comprising most of the ancient region of the same name. Palaiopyrgos ( el, Παλαιόπυργος, ) is a village and a community of the Agia municipality. Before the 2011 local government reform it was a part of the municipality of Evrymenes. The 2011 census recorded 161 inhabitants in the village and 244 in the community. The community of Palaiopyrgos covers an area of 11.678 km2. Karitsa ( el, Καρίτσα, ) is a village and a community of the Agia municipality. Before the 2011 local government reform it was a part of the municipality of Evrymenes. The 2011 census recorded 436 inhabitants in the village and 536 in the community. The community of Karitsa covers an area of 23.241 km2. Omolio ( el, Ομόλιο, ) is a village and a community of the Agia municipality. Before the 2011 local government reform it was a part of the municipality of Evrymenes. The 2011 census recorded 606 inhabitants in the village. The community of Omolio covers an area of 22.38 km2. The site of ancient Homolium can be found within the bounds of the community. Homolium
Homolium or Homolion ( grc, Ὁμόλιον) or Homole (Ὁμόλη) was a town and polis (city-state) of Magnesia in ancient Thessaly, situated at the foot of Mount Homole, and near the edge of the vale of Tempe. Mt. Homole was the part of the chain of Ossa lying between Tempe and the modern village of Karitsa. Mt. Homole is sometimes used as synonymous with Ossa. It was celebrated as a favourite haunt of Pan, and as the abode of the Centaurs and the Lapithae. Pausanias describes it as the most fertile mountain in Thessaly, and well supplied with fountains. Ancient authors differed in their descriptions of the town's location. Mount Ossa ( el, Όσσα), alternatively Kissavos (Κίσσαβος), is a mountain in the Larissa regional unit, in Thessaly, Greece. Larissa ( el, Περιφερειακή ενότητα Λάρισας) is one of the regional units of Greece. It is part of the region of Thessaly. Its capital is the city of Larissa. Total population 269,151 (2021). Geography Larissa is the second largest regional unit in Greece, exceeded only by Aetolia-Acarnania. It covers about one-third of Thessaly. Pineios (Thessaly)
The Pineios ( el, Πηνειός, Pineiós, , , referred to in Latin sources as Peneus) is a river in Thessaly, Greece. The river is named after the god Peneus. During the later Middle Ages, it was also known as the Salamvrias or Salavrias (Σαλα ριάς). It flows from the Pindus mountains through the Thessalian plain and empties into the Aegean Sea, northeast of the Vale of Tempe, near Stomio. It creates a large delta, well known for its beauty and for many animal species, protected by international environmental treaties. Its total length is 205 km. Its drainage basin is . Its source is near the village Malakasi, on the eastern slope of the Pindus main range, east of Metsovo. The Meteora region and the city of Larissa lie along the Pineios.
