Evolution Records
Evolution Records was a record label operated by the Stereo Dimension Records subsidiary of the Longines Symphonette Society, a unit of the Longines watch company. It was founded in 1969 as the retail arm of the mail-order Longines Symphonette Society which usually issued box sets of old radio shows, including a two-record set of Orson Welles's 1938 '' Mercury Theatre on the Air'' production of "The War of the Worlds", or traditional pop songs. Loren Becker was the president of the label. In 1973 the label made a concerted effort to break into the soul music genre. The Canadian rock group Lighthouse earned Evolution its first gold record. The Longines Symphonette
''The Longines Symphonette'' was a pre-recorded classical music program broadcast nightly on many Mutual Broadcasting System stations from 1943 to 1949. It then moved to CBS where it was heard Sundays at 2 pm from 1949 to 1957. The initial conductor was Macklin Marrow, followed for most of the run by , one-time concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic. Frank Knight was the program's announcer. The introductory theme was the final movement of '' Beethoven's 5th Symphony''. The series was sponsored by the Longines-Wittnauer watch company. A spin-off program was ''The Wittnauer Choraliers'' which aired on CBS from March 13, 1949, to April 22, 1955. Orson Welles
George Orson Welles (May 6, 1915 – October 10, 1985) was an American actor, director, producer, and screenwriter, known for his innovative work in film, radio and theatre. ''The Mercury Theatre on the Air'' is a radio series of live radio dramas created and hosted by Orson Welles. The weekly hour-long show presented classic literary works performed by Welles's celebrated Mercury Theatre repertory company, with music composed or arranged by Bernard Herrmann. The series began July 11, 1938, as a sustaining program on the CBS Radio network, airing Mondays at 9 pm ET. On September 11, the show moved to Sundays at 8 pm. Lighthouse (band)
Lighthouse is a Canadian rock band formed in 1968 in Toronto, Ontario, whose repertoire included elements of rock music, jazz, classical music, and swing and featured horns, string instruments, and vibraphone. They won Juno Awards for Best Canadian Group of the Year in 1972, 1973, and 1974. Band history Formation Lighthouse was formed in 1968 in Toronto by vocalist/drummer Skip Prokop, previously of the Paupers, and keyboardist Paul Hoffert. The two met on a flight from New York City to Toronto, and discussed forming a band structured around a rock rhythm section, jazz horn section, and classical string section. Steel River was a Canadian rock group formed in Toronto, which performed primarily during the 1970s. Background Starting in 1965 as a part-time Toronto R&B club band called The Toronto Shotgun, Steel River became a full-time band in 1969. The lineup consisted of singer John Dudgeon, keyboardist Bob Forrester, bassist Rob Cockell, guitarist Tony Dunning, and drummers Ray Angrove and Dennis Watson.
