Edward Evershed
Edward Evershed (3 November 1867 – 18 February 1957) was an English cricketer who played for Derbyshire between 1888 and 1898. Life Evershed was born in Stapenhill, now part of Burton-upon-Trent, Staffordshire (then in Derbyshire), the son of Sydney Evershed the brewer and MP for Burton. In 1888, Evershed played non first-class matches for an Oxford University team and for Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) and then regularly for Derbyshire while they were without first-class status until 1893. Evershed made one first-class appearance for Derbyshire in 1898, as wicketkeeper against Warwickshire. During the season a number of players kept wicket instead of the regular William Storer who still took part in the matches. Evershed batted during the first innings, but did not make a contribution during the second, as the match petered out to a draw. John Evershed
John Evershed CIE FRS FRAS (26 February 1864 – 17 November 1956) was an English astronomer. He was the first to observe radial motions in sunspots, a phenomenon now known as the Evershed effect. Biography Evershed was born in Gomshall, Surrey to John and Sophia (née Price) Evershed. He made the discovery which bears his name while at Kodaikanal Observatory in 1909. After retirement in 1923 he set up a private observatory at Ewhurst, Surrey and built a large spectroheliograph of special design and another with high-dispersion liquid prism. He continued to study the wave-lengths of H and K lines in prominences, giving values of the solar rotation at high levels in different latitudes and at different phases of the solar cycle. Work continued until 1950 when the observatory closed and he presented some of his instruments to the Royal Greenwich Observatory at Herstmonceux. Mary Acworth Evershed
Mary Acworth Evershed (née Orr; 1 January 1867 Plymouth Hoe, Devon – 25 October 1949, Ewhurst, Surrey) was a British astronomer and scholar. Her work on Dante Alighieri was written under the pen name M.A. Orr. Although her middle name is increasingly appearing as Ackworth, this is incorrect. She always gave it as Acworth, and it appeared as such in both her obituaries. The one appearing in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society was written by her nephew A. David Thackeray, who presumably would have known. The first appearance of this incorrect version could well have occurred in the proposal of Mary to be a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society; the correct spelling appears when she was subsequently elected a Fellow. Raymond Evershed, 1st Baron Evershed
Francis Raymond Evershed, 1st Baron Evershed, PC (8 August 1899 – 3 October 1966) was a British judge who served as Master of the Rolls, and subsequently became a Law Lord. Background and education Evershed was the son of Frank Evershed, a brewer and sportsman, and his wife Florence Helen, daughter of Thomas Lowe. He was educated at Clifton College and Balliol College, Oxford. During the First World War he was a Second Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers. In January 1923, he was called to the bar by Lincoln's Inn. He then practiced at the Chancery bar. Legal and judicial career Evershed was made a K.C. in 1933 and a Bencher of Lincoln's Inn in 1938. He became a High Court Judge in 1944 when he was knighted, and Lord Justice of Appeal in 1947, when he was also made a Privy Counsellor. Richard Evershed is a Professor of Biogeochemistry and Fellow of the Royal Society. Education and career Evershed attended St Ivo School, St Ives in the late 1960s and graduated in 1978 from Nottingham Trent University (Trent Polytechnic, Nottingham) with a BSc in Applied Chemistry. He undertook his PhD in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Keele, investigating pheromones in social insects. Following his PhD he worked as a postdoctoral researcher in the Organic Geochemistry Unit in the School of Chemistry, University of Bristol, where he worked with Professor Geoffrey Eglinton and Professor James Maxwell to develop GC/MS and HPLC methodologies to investigate porphyrins in crude oils and source rocks. He moved to the Department of Chemistry, University of Liverpool in 1984 to manage a biochemical mass spectrometry unit, before taking up a position as Lecturer in the School of Chemistry, University of Bristol, in 1993. Sydney Evershed
Sir Sydney Herbert Evershed (13 January 1861 – 7 March 1937) was an English brewer and cricketer who played first-class cricket for Derbyshire from 1880 to 1901 and was a long-serving club captain from 1891 to 1898. Evershed was born in Stapenhill, the son of Sydney Evershed the brewer and MP for Burton. He was educated at Clifton College where he was in the School XI and XV. Evershed played cricket for Burton on Trent and for Staffordshire in 1878s. His Derbyshire career began in 1880 and he appeared in a Gentlemen of Derbyshire team during the 1880 season, in which he made 85 in the first innings before being bowled. Three days later he made his first appearance for Derbyshire against Yorkshire, though he was out for a duck in his first innings. Sydney Evershed (brewer)
Sydney Evershed (c. 1825 – 1903) was an English brewer and Liberal Party politician who represented Burton. Evershed's family came from Albury in Surrey. By 1860 he had moved to Burton-on-Trent, and became a Burton brewer. He lived at Stapenhill, where he built Albury House, named after his birthplace. Evershed was active in local politics and was one of the Improvement Commissioners, and one of the first councillors when Burton was incorporated as a borough in 1878. In 1886, he was elected as Member of Parliament for Burton which he held until 1900. He died at Marylebone in 1903. Evershed married Fanny Whitehead at Marylebone in 1856. Wallis Evershed (10 May 1863 – 8 May 1911) was an English cricketer who played for Derbyshire between 1882 and 1884. Evershed was born in Stapenhill, the son of Sydney Evershed the brewer and MP for Burton. William Evershed (25 November 1818 – 24 November 1887) was an English first-class cricketer who made his debut for Hampshire against Petworth in 1845. Evershed represented Hampshire against the same opposition again in the same season. In 1849 Evershed made a single appearance for Sussex against Surrey.
