Evensong (film)
''Evensong'' is a 1934 British musical film directed by Victor Saville and starring Evelyn Laye, Fritz Kortner and Emlyn Williams. It is loosely based on the story of the singer Nellie Melba. It was also the first film of Alec Guinness, who appears as an uncredited extra. It was shot the Lime Grove Studios. The film's sets were designed by the art director Alfred Junge. Victor Saville
Victor Saville (25 September 1895 – 8 May 1979) was an English film director, producer, and screenwriter. He directed 39 films between 1927 and 1954. He also produced 36 films between 1923 and 1962. Biography Saville produced his first film, '' Woman to Woman'', with Michael Balcon in 1923, and on the back of its success produced pictures for the veteran director Maurice Elvey, including the classic British silent '' Hindle Wakes'' (1927). His first picture as director was '' The Arcadians'' (1927). In 1929 he and Balcon worked together again on a talkie remake of ''Woman to Woman'' for Balcon's company, Gainsborough Pictures. This time Saville directed it. From 1931, as Gainsborough Pictures and the Gaumont British Picture Corporation joined forces, Saville produced a string of comedies, musicals and dramas for Gainsborough and Gaumont-British, including the popular Jessie Matthews pictures. Sir Alec Guinness (born Alec Guinness de Cuffe; 2 April 1914 – 5 August 2000) was an English actor. Frederick Leister
Frederick Leister (1 December 1885 – 24 August 1970), was an English actor. He began his career in musical comedy and after serving in the First World War he played character roles in modern West End plays and in classic drama. He appeared in more than 60 films between 1922 and 1961. Life and career Leister was born in London, the son of George Leister Holloway and his wife Mary Ann King Holloway, ''née'' Le Capelain. He was educated at Dulwich and Worthing Grammar School. He was intended for a career as a lawyer and served his time as an articled clerk to a solicitor's firm. Browning Mummery
Joseph Browning Mummery (12 July 188816 March 1974), was an Australian opera tenor of the 1920s and 1930s who achieved a considerable reputation in Europe and America. He appeared on stage with Dame Nellie Melba on various occasions at her request. Career Mummery was born in Carlton, Melbourne, the only son of Joseph Ernest Mummery, jeweller, and his wife Matilda Louise Mummery, née Henry. He embarked on a career in engineering, but switched to his first love, singing, tutored by baritone A. C. Bartleman, a near-contemporary. In 1919 he made his grand opera debut with Frank Rigo's opera company, under Gustave Slapoffski, as the title character in ''Faust''. His old tutor A C. Bartleman was in the cast as Valentine. Muriel Aked (9 November 1883 – 21 March 1955) was an English film actress. Early life, family and education Aked was born in Bingley, West Riding of Yorkshire, England to George Henry Aked and his wife Emma (née Bairstow). Alice Delysia
Alice Henriette Lapize (3 March 1889 – 10 February 1979), better known by her stage name, Alice Delysia and sometimes Elise Delisia, was a French actress and singer who made her career in English musical theatre. After performing in the chorus at the Moulin Rouge and other theatres in Paris from the age of 14, she became a chorus girl in Edwardian musical comedies, briefly on Broadway theatre, Broadway in 1905, then in London for several years and back in Paris in 1912. She got her big break in 1913, when she was offered a leading role in a revue presented by the impresario Charles B. Cochran, C B Cochran. The show was a hit and established Delysia as a star. Carl Esmond
Carl Esmond (born Karl Simon; June 14, 1902– December 4, 2004) was an Austrian-born American film and stage actor, born in Vienna, Austria-Hungary. Although his age was given as 33 in the passenger list when he arrived in the USA in January 1938, in his naturalization petition his birth year is stated as 1902. His stage names were Willy Eichberger and Charles Esmond and finally Carl Esmond. He trained at Vienna's State Academy of Dramatic Arts, and made his film debut in the operetta '' The Emperor's Waltz'' (1933). He was active in the Viennese genre of shallow romantic comedies so popular in the Austria of the interwar period. Esmond fled Germany following the Nazi takeover, first to the UK and finally in January 1938 to the USA. Esmond continued to appear on stage as well as in British and American films. Alfred Junge
Alfred Junge (29 January 1886, Görlitz, Silesia (now Saxony), Germany – 16 July 1964, London) was a German-born production designer who spent a large part of his career working in the British film industry. Junge had wanted to be an artist from childhood. Dabbling in theatre in his teenage years, he joined the Görlitz Stadttheater at eighteen and was involved in all areas of production. He worked in the theatre for over fifteen years. Junge began his career in film at Berlin's UFA studios, working there as an art director from 1920 until 1926, when he joined the production team of director E.A. Dupont who was relocating to British International Pictures. He remained with BIP at Elstree Studios until 1930 when he returned briefly to the continent to work in Germany and then in France with Marcel Pagnol. From 1932 he remained in Britain.
