Evenings (film)
''Evenings'' ( nl, De Avonden) is a 1989 Dutch film directed by Rudolf van den Berg. It is based on the novel of the same title by Gerard Reve. The film was selected as the Dutch entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 63rd Academy Awards, but was not accepted as a nominee. Leading roles were played by Thom Hoffman, Rijk de Gooyer and Pierre Bokma. The film won two Golden Calf awards: best film, best actor (Thom Hoffman). Plot The film follows Frits van Egters in the days before New Years 1947. This is a list of submissions to the 63rd Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film. The Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film was created in 1956 by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to honour non-English-speaking films produced outside the United States. The award is handed out annually, and is accepted by the winning film's director, although it is considered an award for the submitting country as a whole. Countries are invited by the Academy to submit their best films for competition according to strict rules, with only one film being accepted from each country. For the 63rd Academy Awards, thirty-seven films were submitted in the category Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. The five nominated films came from China, France, Germany, Italy and the eventual winner, '' Journey of Hope'' from Switzerland. Chile and Germany submitted films for the first time. The Golden Calf ( nl, Gouden Kalf) is the award of the Netherlands Film Festival, which is held annually in Utrecht. The award has been presented since 1981, originally in six categories: Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Feature Film, Best Short Film, Culture Prize and Honourable mention. In 2004, there were 16 award categories, mainly because in 2003 the categories Best Photography, Best Montage, Best Music, Best Production Design, Best Sound Design were added. ''The Evenings: A Winter's Tale'' (Dutch: ''De avonden: Een winterverhaal'') is a debut novel by Dutch author Gerard Reve released in November 1947 under the pseudonym "Simon van het Reve". The novel describes ten evenings out of the life of the 23-year-old office clerk Frits van Egters living in Amsterdam. It is partitioned into ten chapters, of which each describes an evening between 22 and 31 December 1946. The novel was written very shortly after World War II. Though the war itself is hardly mentioned, the story gives, by describing an individual's experiences, a detailed description of contemporary post-war society which was marked by fear, boredom and loneliness. Reception and accolades Upon its original release, the book shocked the critics and received mixed reviews. Pierre Henri Martin Bokma (born 20 December 1955 in Paris) is a Dutch Stage (theatre), stage, television and film actor. Bokma received his professional training at the Maastricht Academy of Dramatic Arts. In November 2007 he won an International Emmy Award for his role in the movie De uitverkorene (The Chosen One). He shared his award with the British actor Jim Broadbent. Rijk De Gooyer
Rijk de Gooyer (17 December 1925 – 2 November 2011) was a Dutch Golden Calf-winning actor, writer, comedian and singer. From the 1950s until the early 1970s, he became well known in The Netherlands as part of a comic duo with John Kraaijkamp, Sr. In the United States best known for having small roles in films such as '' Nosferatu: Phantom der Nacht'', ''Soldaat van Oranje'', '' A Time to Die'' and ''The Wilby Conspiracy''. Biography De Gooyer was raised in a baker's family, born as one half of a fraternal twin. In World War II he worked as an interpreter. Initially for the American 101st Airborne, later on for the British Field Security. From 1959 till 1961 de Gooyer studied at an actors school of the UFA in Berlin. During these years, he supposedly worked for the CIA as an informant. In the 1950s, he started a comic duo with Johnny Kraaijkamp.
