Eve Greene
Eve Greene (May 21, 1906 – July 15, 1997) was an American screenwriter active primarily during the 1930s through the 1950s. Biography Early life Greene grew up in Champaign, Illinois, and dreamed of being a Hollywood writer. Career She attended the University of Illinois and then moved to Los Angeles, where she got a job as a secretary at MGM and was mentored by Charles Brabin. She'd later be promoted to script clerk. She credited Zelda Sears for helping her learn the ropes in the industry. At MGM, under Sears's tutelage, she wrote a few Marie Dressler vehicles before moving on to Paramount and then to freelance at various Hollywood studios. Personal life Eve's sister, Babette Greene, was executive secretary of the Screen Writers Guild. ''Prosperity'' is a 1932 American Pre-Code Hollywood, pre-Code comedy-drama film starring Marie Dressler and Polly Moran. The two leading actresses play longtime matriarchal ladies comically sparring off each other, and trying to control their intertwined lives. Plot Maggie Warren (Dressler) inherited a family bank during the Depression and Lizzie Praskins (Moran) is one of her biggest depositors. Maggie’s son John is engaged to Lizzies's daughter Helen. All kinds of farces happen when the would-be mothers-in-law battle for setting the wedding's protocol including their different preferences of choosing the pastor to perform the ceremony. As the story goes on, Lizzie has a panic attack based on rumors about the bank going to belly-up. ''Tugboat Annie'' is a 1933 American pre-Code film directed by Mervyn LeRoy, written by Norman Reilly Raine and Zelda Sears, and starring Marie Dressler and Wallace Beery as a comically quarrelsome middle-aged couple who operate a tugboat. Dressler and Beery were MGM's most popular screen team at that time, having recently made the bittersweet ''Min and Bill'' (1930) together, for which Dressler won the Academy Award for Best Actress. The boisterous Tugboat Annie character first appeared in a series of stories in the ''Saturday Evening Post'' written by the author Norman Reilly Raine which were supposedly based on the life of Thea Foss of Tacoma, Washington.
