Evanston Art Center
The Evanston Art Center is an arts center in Evanston, Illinois offering classes, lectures, exhibitions, and community outreach. It is among the oldest and largest arts centers in Illinois. History The Evanston Art Center was founded in October, 1929. It was officially incorporated as a non-profit organization in 1942. The center was originally located in the basement of the Evanston Public Library until it began leasing the historical Harley Clarke Mansion at Lighthouse Beach in 1966. The center rented additional studio space at the Noyes Cultural Arts Center in the 1980s. In 2015, the center moved to its current location at 1717 Central Street in Evanston, Illinois, a 20,000 sq. ft. former office building, which considerably expanded the available space. The move was funded by a capital campaign that raised $2.5 million. Abstract Art
Abstract art uses visual language of shape, form, color and line to create a composition which may exist with a degree of independence from visual references in the world. Paul Wieghardt
Paul Wieghardt (1897–1969) was a German-born American artist and professor, he is known for his paintings. He taught at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT). Early life and education Paul Wieghardt was born 1897 in Lüdenscheid, North Rhine-Westphalia in Germany. His father had a painting business where he apprenticed when he was young. During World War I he served in the military. He attended school at the Cologne Academy of Fine and Applied Arts (also known as Kölner Werkschulen) starting in 1920, where he studied architecture with Martin Elsaesser and Robert Seuffert. At the advice of his teachers he decided to switch to fine arts. Alice Riley
Alice Cushing Donaldson Riley (1860 – 1955) was an American author and arts club founder. She is known for her children's poetry, stories, books, songs, and several one-act plays. She established art clubs and art centers in Illinois, including the Riley Circle, which led to the Drama Club of Evanston, she inspired the Drama League of America, was a charter club member of the Garden Club of Evanston, and co-founded the Evanston Arts Center. Her best known work was "Slumber Boat", a children's lullaby co-written with her dear friend Dorothy "Jessie" L. Gaynor.
