Evan Thomas Davies (musician)
Evan Thomas Davies (1878 – 1969) was a Welsh musician. His parents were George Davies (a Dowlais barber), and Gwenllian, of Dowlais. His mother's family were descendants of songwriter Richard Samuel Hughes. He received private musical tuition from organist and composer Harry Evans, and in 1900 toured the USA as a pianist and organist.Foreman, Lewis. Dowlais
Dowlais () is a village and community of the county borough of Merthyr Tydfil, in Wales. At the 2011 census the electoral ward had a population of 6,926, The population of the Community being 4,270 at the 2011 census having excluded Pant. Dowlais is notable within Wales and Britain for its historic association with ironworking; once employing, through the Dowlais Iron Company, roughly 5,000 people, the works being the largest in the world at one stage. Name The name is derived from the Welsh ''du'' meaning 'black' and ''glais'' meaning 'stream'. History Dowlais came to prominence in the 18th and 19th centuries because of its iron and steelworks. By the mid-1840s there were between 5000 and 7000 men, women and children employed in the Dowlais works. Harry Evans (composer)
Harry Evans (1 May 1873 – 23 July 1914) was a Welsh musician, conductor and composer. He was born in Dowlais near Merthyr Tydfil, the son of a local choirmaster, John Evans (Eos Myrddin), and learned music at home, showing such precocious talent that he was appointed organist of Gwernllwyn Congregational Church at the age of nine. The church sponsored his music studies, but family circumstances prevented him proceeding to college, and he had to take a position as a pupil-teacher. In 1893, having suffered serious ill-health, he abandoned teaching for music. In 1898, Evans formed two choirs in the Merthyr area, one for men and one for women. His male voice choir won first prize at the National Eisteddfod of Wales in 1900, and he was conductor in the following year when the National Eisteddfod was held in Merthyr.
