Evan E. Settle
Evan Evans Settle (December 1, 1848 – November 16, 1899) was a U.S. Representative from Kentucky. Born in Frankfort, Kentucky, Settle attended the public schools. He was graduated from Louisville High School in June 1864. He studied law. He was admitted to the bar in 1870 and commenced practice in Owenton, Kentucky. Settle was elected prosecuting attorney of Owen County in 1878, 1882, and 1886. He resigned in 1887. He served as member of the State house of representatives 1887–1890. He served as delegate to the 1888 Democratic National Convention. Settle was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-fifth and Fifty-sixth Congresses and served from March 4, 1897, until his death in Owenton, Kentucky, November 16, 1899. He was interred in Odd Fellows Cemetery. Kentucky ( , ), officially the Commonwealth of Kentucky, is a state in the Southeastern region of the United States and one of the states of the Upper South. 56th United States Congress
The 56th United States Congress was a meeting of the legislative branch of the United States federal government, composed of the United States Senate and the United States House of Representatives. It met in Washington, D.C. from March 4, 1899, to March 4, 1901, during the third and fourth years of William McKinley's presidency. The apportionment of seats in this House of Representatives was based on the Eleventh Census of the United States in 1890. Both chambers had a Republican majority. There was one African-American member, George Henry White of North Carolina, who served his second and final term as a Representative in this Congress, and would be the last black member of Congress until 1928, and the last black member of Congress from the South until 1972. The United States Congress is the legislature of the federal government of the United States. It is bicameral, composed of a lower body, the House of Representatives, and an upper body, the Senate.
