British Hong Kong
Hong Kong was a colony and later a dependent territory of the British Empire from 1841 to 1997, apart from a period of occupation under the Japanese Empire from 1941 to 1945 during the Pacific War. 2005 World Badminton Championships
The 2005 IBF World Championships (14th World Badminton Championships) was held in Anaheim, southern California, United States, from August 15 to August 21, 2005. 2004 Olympic champion Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia won the men's singles over China's Lin Dan, while Peter Gade of Denmark and Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia received bronze medals. In the women's singles category, Xie Xingfang won the gold medal beating compatriot 2004 Olympic gold medalist Zhang Ning. Germany's Xu Huaiwen and Chinese Taipei's Cheng Shao-chieh won bronze medals. Cheng Shao-chieh also created some surprise results in the tournament. Charmaine Reid
Charmaine Reid (born November 3, 1973) is a Canadian badminton player. Her home is in Calgary. Her coaching has been by Bryan Moody (a Canadian champion), Ardy Wiranata (Indonesian working in Canada and former World Champion), and Ken Poole (past president of the Canadian Badminton Coaches' Association). In 2004, she competed at the Summer Olympics in Athens in both singles and doubles. Reid won five Canadian National Championships between 2005 and 2007, two of them in women's singles, and three in women's doubles. She has won one gold and four silver medals at the Pan American Games. In 2016, she was inducted into Niagara Falls Sports Wall of Fame in recognition of her accomplishments and contribution to the sport of badminton around the world. Riocentro is an exhibition and convention center located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Built in 1977, it is the largest exhibition center in Latin America. Notable events 1981 May Day attack On April 30, 1981, during a May Day music concert, Riocentro was the target of a terrorist attack by hardliner members of the Brazilian military dictatorship (1964–1985). Sergeant Guilherme Pereira do Rosário and then-Captain Wilson Dias Machado, nowadays a Colonel, were responsible for detonating two bombs at the venue. Around 9 p.m., however, one of the bombs exploded in the lap of Sergeant Rosário, killing him and seriously wounding Machado. Anna Kathleen Rice (born 19 August 1980) is a Canadian badminton player. She attended Handsworth Secondary School, and completed a B.A. from the University of British Columbia. Career In 1999, Rice represented British Columbia competed at the Canada Winter Games in Corner Brook, clinched the women's singles title and runner-up in the women's doubles. In 2000, Rice moved to Denmark to play in the Danish Club League and to train at the International Badminton Academy under coach Michael Kjeldsen. Howard Bach
Howard Bach (born February 22, 1979) is a Vietnamese-American male badminton player from the United States. He was the 2005 world champion in the men's doubles with Tony Gunawan. Early life He was born in Vietnam, Howard Bach came to the U.S. at the age of two, when his father, Cam Sen Bach, emigrated to San Francisco with his family in 1982. From 1991–1993, he attended Marina Middle School in San Francisco. When he was five years old, Howard Bach was brought by his father to the Golden Gate YMCA in San Francisco's Tenderloin District. It was here that over the next 11 years, Howard Bach would be coached by his father in badminton. Bach was a 16-year-old student at Galileo High School when he decided to dedicate himself to the sport of badminton. Mesinee "May" Mangkalakiri ( th, เมษิณี มังคละคีรี; ; born April 21, 1983, in Los Alamitos, California) is an American badminton player of Thai descent. She won a bronze medal, along with her partner Raju Rai, in the mixed doubles at the 2003 Pan American Games in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. She repeated her bronze medal performance with her new partner Bob Malaythong in the mixed doubles, and also, beat Canada's Fiona McKee and Charmaine Reid for the gold in the women's doubles at the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
