European Party Of Armenia
The European Party of Armenia () is a Pro-Europeanism, pro-European political party in Armenia. It was founded on 6 November 2018 by film-maker Tigran Khzmalyan. History The founding congress of the European Party of Armenia was held on 6 November 2018, in Yerevan. Tigran Khzmalyan was elected by party members as Chairman. The party then released its charter and manifesto as well as completed its registration with the Ministry of Justice (Armenia), Ministry of Justice on 13 November 2018. Currently, the party acts as an Extra-parliamentary opposition, extra-parliamentary force. Tigran Khzmalyan confirmed that the party will continue to act as a strong Opposition (politics), opposition and continue their activities to hold government accountable and ensure Armenia's future lies with the European Union. Tigran Khzmalyan
Tigran Khzmalyan (also known as Xmalian) ( hy, Տիգրան Խզմալյան) is an Armenian independent filmmaker, screenwriter, producer, and political activist. Since 2018, Khzmalyan has served as the Chairman of the European Party of Armenia. 2018 Armenian Parliamentary Election
Snap parliamentary elections were held in Armenia on 9 December 2018, as none of the parties in the National Assembly were able to put forward and then elect a candidate for Prime Minister in the two-week period following the resignation of incumbent Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on 16 October. They were the first elections after the 2018 revolution and the country's first-ever snap elections. The result was a landslide victory for Pashinyan's My Step Alliance, which received 70% of the vote and won 88 of the 132 seats in the National Assembly. Union for National Self-Determination ( hy, Ազգային ինքնորոշում միավորում; ''Azgayin ink’noroshum miavorum'') is an Armenian political party. It was founded in 1987 by Paruyr Hayrikyan, a Soviet dissident seeking independence for Armenia. History The party was founded in 1987 as the successor of the defunct National United Party. In late 1989, a number of members of the executive council of the party, including Movses Gorgisyan and Ashot Navasardyan, founded the Army of Independence, an armed group aimed at achieving Armenia's independence which engaged in violent clashes with the Soviet authorities in the Armenian SSR and the Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast. Paruyr Hayrikyan
Paruyr Arshaviri Hayrikyan (born July 5, 1949) is an Armenian politician and former Soviet dissident. He was an early member and leader of the National United Party (NUP), which sought Armenia's independence from the Soviet Union. He spent a total of about 18 years in Soviet correctional facilities for his dissident activities and was eventually expelled from the Soviet Union in 1988, although he was allowed to return two years later. Since Armenia gained its independence in 1991, Hayrikyan has been active in Armenian politics as the leader of the Union for National Self-Determination, the successor party to the NUP, and took part in presidential elections in 1991 and 2013, surviving an assassination attempt during the latter. He is also a writer and accomplished composer, having authored several popular patriotic Armenian songs. 2016 Yerevan Hostage Crisis
On 17 July 2016, a group of armed men calling themselves the ''Daredevils of Sasun'' (; the name is taken from an epic poem) stormed a police station in Yerevan, Armenia and took nine hostages. They demanded the release of opposition leader Jirair Sefilian and the resignation of President Serzh Sargsyan. The group began a standoff with government forces, with growing crowds of protesters joining the calls for the resignation of the president. Two policemen were killed during the standoff and dozens were wounded; one policeman died of his wounds after the end of the crisis. Several of the attackers were wounded as well. In a 2017 survey the 38% of respondents supported Sasna Tsrer's actions, while 16% condemned.
