Covered Bond
Covered bonds are debt securities issued by a bank or mortgage institution and collateralised against a pool of assets that, in case of failure of the issuer, can cover claims at any point of time. They are subject to specific legislation to protect bond holders. Unlike Asset-backed security, asset-backed securities created in securitization, the covered bonds continue as obligations of the issuer; in essence, the investor has recourse against the issuer and the collateral, sometimes known as "dual recourse". Typically, covered bond assets remain on the issuer's consolidated balance sheet (usually with an appropriate capital charge). Founded in 1967, the European Mortgage Federation (EMF) is the representative at EU level of the mortgage loan product, bringing together national banking associations and individual mortgage lenders from the EU Member States. The EMF is today recognised as the voice of the European mortgage industry on the retail side of the business in Europe and beyond. Through its work the Federation has become the key-talking partner of the European Commission, the European Parliament, the European Central Bank, the European System of Financial Supervisors and the Basel Committee on all questions relating to the European mortgage industry.
