Hotel Europe (Sarajevo)
Hotel Europe (originally known as Hotel Evropa) is a historic hotel in central Sarajevo. Built and opened in the early days of what turned out to be a 40-year Austro-Hungarian occupation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the hotel holds a special place in the city's lore as its first modern hospitality venue. Over its almost century and a half long existence, the hotel saw many changes often brought upon by sudden geopolitical events, reflecting the city's turbulent political and social history. For the initial 60 years, from its construction and grand opening until World War II, Hotel Evropa was owned and run by the Jeftanović family, father and son and Dušan, respectively, Serb merchants and industrialists from Sarajevo. Hotel Europe is a six-story heritage building located at 43 Powell Street (at Alexander) in the Gastown area of Vancouver, British Columbia. The building was commissioned by hotelier Angelo Calori and built in 1908-1909 by Parr and Fee Architects. Situated on a triangular lot, the building is designed in the flatiron style. It was the first reinforced concrete structure to be built in Canada and the earliest fireproof hotel in Western Canada. Contractors had to be brought in from Cincinnati, Ohio for the necessary expertise; the Ferro-Concrete Construction Company began this project six years after constructing the first tall concrete building in the world. Edificio Gonzalo Mejía
The Edificio Gonzalo Mejía was an ''art nouveau'' hotel, theatre, and commercial building in Medellín, Colombia standing from 1924 to 1967. Designed by the Belgian architect Agustín Goovaerts in 1922, the building contained the Hotel Europa and a theatre dedicated to showing movies along with other commercial clients. The building has been considered as one of the finest works of architecture built in Colombia during the 1920s. In 1967, the building was demolished and replaced by the Coltejer Building, the tallest in Medellín. Mayfair
Mayfair is an affluent area in the West End of London towards the eastern edge of Hyde Park, in the City of Westminster, between Oxford Street, Regent Street, Piccadilly and Park Lane. It is one of the most expensive districts in the world. The area was originally part of the manor of Eia and remained largely rural until the early 18th century. It became well known for the annual "May Fair" that took place from 1686 to 1764 in what is now Shepherd Market. 1996 Cairo Shooting
At 7am on 18 April 1996, four Islamists carried out a mass shooting against a group of 88 Greek tourists outside the Europa Hotel in Cairo, Egypt. Eighteen people were killed - 17 Greek tourists and one Egyptian. The victims were outside the hotel, about to board a bus to Alexandria. Al-Jama'a al-Islamiyya claimed responsibility for the attack, saying that they thought the tourists were Israelis. The Egyptian Sunni jihadist group carried out attacks in the 1990s, some of which targeted tourists. The Europa Hotel is a four-star hotel in Great Victoria Street, Belfast, Northern Ireland. It is known as the "most bombed hotel in Europe" and the "most bombed hotel in the world" after having suffered 36 bomb attacks during the Troubles. Gianfranco Frattini (May 15, 1926 – April 6, 2004) was an Italian architect and designer. He is a member of the generation that created the Italian design movement in the late 1950s through the 1960s and is considered to have played a major role in shaping it. Early life and education Gianfranco Frattini was born in Padua, Italy on May 15, 1926. He graduated with a degree in architecture from the Politecnico di Milano in 1953.
