EuroCity, abbreviated as EC, is a cross-border train category within the European inter-city rail network. The New Pendolino is a class of high-speed tilting trains built by Alstom Ferroviaria ( Fiat Ferroviaria) for Trenitalia and Cisalpino. It is derived from a model developed for the Chinese operator Changchun Railway Company, and subsequently developed for other railway companies, optionally using the variable weight technology that characterizes this family of trains. Overview The name ''Pendolino'' is used to identify a family of high-speed, tilting-technology trains, produced in Italy. These trains owe their name (''pendolino'' can mean 'small pendulum' in Italian) to the mechanism enabling them to tilt when going round a curve. EuroCity Express, or short ECE, is a category of Eurocity train marketed by Deutsche Bahn that runs on two routes as of 2021. It was created to classify a newly introduced international high speed train service in a higher category - equivalent to the Intercity-Express - than the existing Eurocity, which is equivalent to the "second tier" domestic Intercity. History The train category was newly created with the timetable change on December 10, 2017, because the Frankfurt-Milan connection, operated with an ETR 610 of the Swiss Federal Railways, offers ICE-like travel times and comfort, according to Deutsche Bahn. Cisalpino AG () was a railway company, referred to as CIS in timetables, operating international trains between Switzerland and Italy connecting Basel, Schaffhausen, Zürich, Geneva, Milan, Venice, Trieste, Livorno, and Florence. The company has its legal headquarters in Muri bei Bern, Switzerland, and is jointly owned by the Swiss Federal Railways and Trenitalia. It was founded in 1993 to operate fast trains across the Alps using tilting trains. The Intercity Express (commonly known as ICE ()) is a system of high-speed trains predominantly running in Germany.
