Eugenius (band)
Eugenius (formerly known as Captain America) was an indie rock band from Glasgow, Scotland that existed from 1990–1998, centred on former Vaselines singer/guitarist Eugene Kelly and featuring members of BMX Bandits and Teenage Fanclub. History Captain America was formed in 1990 by Eugene Kelly following the dissolution of his former band, The Vaselines. In the year following the split, Kelly worked as a bartender, where he witnessed early gigs by Teenage Fanclub. This inspired him to form a new band. The initial line-up as Captain America was Eugene Kelly (guitar and vocals), Gordon Keen (of BMX Bandits, guitar), James Seenan (bass), and Andy Bollen (drums), who replaced guest live drummer Brendan O'Hare of Teenage Fanclub. The line-up later changed, as the name changed to Eugenius with Seenan leaving to be replaced by Raymond Boyle, and Roy Lawrence replacing Bollen. Indie Rock
Indie rock is a Music subgenre, subgenre of rock music that originated in the United States, United Kingdom and New Zealand from the 1970s to the 1980s. Originally used to describe independent record labels, the term became associated with the music they produced and was initially used interchangeably with alternative rock or "Pop rock, guitar pop rock". One of the primary scenes of the movement was Dunedin, where Dunedin sound, a cultural scene based around a convergence of noise pop and jangle became popular among the city's University of Otago, large student population. Independent labels such as Flying Nun Records, Flying Nun began to promote the scene across New Zealand, inspiring key college rock bands in the United States such as Pavement (band), Pavement, Pixies (band), Pixies and R.E.M. Kurt Cobain
Kurt Donald Cobain (February 20, 1967 – April 5, 1994) was an American musician who served as the lead vocalist, guitarist and primary songwriter of the rock band Nirvana. Through his angst-fueled songwriting and anti-establishment persona, Cobain's compositions widened the thematic conventions of mainstream rock. He was heralded as a spokesman of Generation X and is considered one of the most influential musicians in the history of alternative rock. Mary Queen Of Scots (album)
''Mary Queen of Scots'' is the second and final album by Eugenius, released in 1994. Several songs on the album were released on singles in 1993. The title track was featured as a B-side to the non-LP single "Caesar's Vein", with "Easter Bunny" being released as the follow-up single. The track "Blue Above the Rooftops" was released as a single to support the album in 1994. The track "Home Sick" is only featured on the American release of the album and elsewhere was used as a B-side. The B-side "Green Bed" from the "Caesar's Vein" EP also likely comes from the album sessions. Critical reception Dave Thompson, in ''Alternative Rock'', called the album "stronger, more focussed, certainly brighter and cleaner" than the debut. Oomalama
''Oomalama'' is the debut album by Scottish pop rock band Eugenius, released in 1992. The band had released one single and an EP on Paperhouse Records prior to this album, however, ''Oomalama'' was their first release under Atlantic Records. The album was released when the band members of Eugenius consisted of Eugene Kelly (guitar and vocals), Gordon Keen (guitar), Raymond Boyle (bass) and Roy Lawrence (drums), however, most of the songs were recorded prior to Boyle's and Lawrence's introduction to the band, and therefore these members do not appear much on the album. The tracks "Bed-In" and "Buttermilk" were released as promotional singles in support of the album, each with accompanying music videos. Steve Greenberg is an American record producer currently heading the S-Curve Records label. He also manages the pop band AJR and is the host/writer of the podcast "Speed of Sound". He is noted for "discovering" popular musical acts such as Hanson, Baha Men, Jonas Brothers, Joss Stone and AJR. He received a 2000 Grammy Award in the "Best Dance Recording" category as a producer of "Who Let the Dogs Out?" by Baha Men.
