Eugene S. Ives
Eugene Semmes Ives (November 11, 1859 Washington, D.C. – August 25, 1917 Mist, Madera County, California) was an American lawyer and politician from New York and Arizona. Life He was the son of Joseph Christmas Ives (1829–1868) and Cora Matilda (Semmes) Ives (1834–1916) . He attended Georgetown College, and schools in Austria and Belgium. He graduated from Columbia Law School in 1880, was admitted to the bar, and practiced in New York City. Ives was a member of the New York State Assembly (New York County, 19th D.) in 1885 and 1887. He was a member of the New York State Senate (11th D.) from 1888 to 1891, sitting in the 111th, 112th, 113th and 114th New York State Legislatures. On June 5, 1889, he married Ann Maria Waggaman (1870–1951), and they had eight children. The 111th New York State Legislature, consisting of the New York State Senate and the New York State Assembly, met from January 3 to July 20, 1888, during the fourth year of David B. Hill's governorship, in Albany. Background Under the provisions of the New York Constitution of 1846, 32 Senators and 128 assemblymen were elected in single-seat districts; senators for a two-year term, assemblymen for a one-year term. The senatorial districts were made up of entire counties, except New York County (seven districts) and Kings County (three districts). Calvary Cemetery, East Los Angeles
Calvary Cemetery is a Roman Catholic cemetery that the Archdiocese of Los Angeles runs in the community of East Los Angeles. It is also called "New Calvary Cemetery" because it succeeded the original Calvary Cemetery (on north Broadway), over which Cathedral High School was built. History Old Calvary When Los Angeles was originally surveyed and mapped under the leadership of Gen. Edward Ord in 1849, its graveyard was at the upper end of Eternity Street. At the lower end of Eternity was the first church in Los Angeles, the Placita. 21st Arizona Territorial Legislature
The 21st Arizona Territorial Legislative Assembly was a session of the Arizona Territorial Legislature which convened in Phoenix, Arizona. The session ran from January 21, 1901, till March 21, 1901. It was the first session of the territorial legislature to meet in the territorial capital building and overrode more vetoes than any other session. Background The previous session of the legislature had authorized creation of a committee "to revise the laws and eliminate therefrom all crude, improper and contradictory matter and also to insert such new provisions as they may deem necessary and proper." The revised code proposed by the committee was based upon the civil code of Texas and the criminal code of California as was ready as the 21st session began. The Southern Pacific (or Espee from the railroad initials- SP) was an American Class I railroad network that existed from 1865 to 1996 and operated largely in the Western United States. The system was operated by various companies under the names Southern Pacific Railroad, Southern Pacific Company and Southern Pacific Transportation Company. The original Southern Pacific began in 1865 as a land holding company. The last incarnation of the Southern Pacific, the Southern Pacific Transportation Company, was founded in 1969 and assumed control of the Southern Pacific system. Yuma ( coc, Yuum) is a city in and the county seat of Yuma County, Arizona, United States. The city's population was 93,064 at the 2010 census, up from the 2000 census population of 77,515.
