Eugene Milton
Eugene (Gene) Milton (born September 28, 1944) is a former American football wide receiver and kick returner. Milton was born on September 28, 1944 in Ocala, Florida and attended segregated Howard High School, where he set numerous Florida Interscholastic Athletic Association (the association for negro schools) records, including a 9.4 time in the 100 yard dash. Although this record tied the national high school record set by Jesse Owens, James Jackson, and Trenton Jackson, it was not widely reported He attended Florida A & M University where he excelled both in football and track. After graduating from FAMU, he played professional football for the Miami Dolphins. He later coached football at Florida Memorial University, Miami Central High School, Miami Carol City High School, and Miami Park High School. Howard High School (Florida)
Howard High School was a segregated black school in Ocala, Florida. It closed in 1969, after the public schools were integrated in 1968. It is now a middle school. History The school was built as Howard Academy in 1866 on land donated by James H. Howard, a former slaveowner, on the corner of Osceola and Third streets. The building burned down in 1887, and a new school was built the next year at the corner of Adams and Bay, which is now Northwest Second Street and Northwest Seventh Avenue, at a cost of $1600. The teachers and additional financial support and the teachers came from the Freedmen's Bureau. The school was named after Union Army General Oliver Otis Howard, who was the first and only director of the Freedmen's Bureau. Florida A&M Rattlers Football
The Florida A&M Rattlers football team represents Florida A&M University in the sport of American football. The Rattlers compete in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) of NCAA Division I, Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The Florida Interscholastic Athletics Association was, during segregation, the organization of the athletic programs black high schools in Florida. It divided schools into classes to match teams from similar schools, and set up game schedules. Florida Memorial University is a private historically black university in Miami Gardens, Florida. It is a member of the United Negro College Fund and historically related to Baptists although it claims a focus on broader Christianity.
