Eugene A. Toepel
Eugene A. Toepel (July 29, 1916July 27, 2006) was an American lawyer, jurist, and Republican Party (United States), Republican politician from La Crosse County, Wisconsin. He represented La Crosse County for three terms in the Wisconsin State Assembly (1953–1959), and then served five years as a Wisconsin circuit courts, Wisconsin circuit court judge. Biography Born in Bangor, Wisconsin, Toepel graduated from the University of Wisconsin Law School in 1939. He served in the United States Army in Europe during World War II from 1942 to 1946, then served in the Wisconsin State Assembly from 1953 until 1957 as a Republican Party (United States), Republican. In 1957, Toepel resigned from the Wisconsin State Assembly, when the Governor of Wisconsin Vernon Wallace Thomson appointed Toepel county judge (later Wisconsin Circuit Court judge) in La Crosse County, Wisconsin to fill a vacancy. Wisconsin Circuit Courts
The Wisconsin circuit courts are the general trial courts in the state of Wisconsin. There are currently 69 circuits in the state, divided into 10 judicial administrative districts. Circuit court judges hear and decide both civil and criminal cases. Each of the 249 circuit court judges are elected and serve six-year terms. On March 6, 2020, Governor Tony Evers signed bipartisan legislation to create 12 new circuit court branches, with four seats to be added each year from 2021 to 2023. Structure of the circuit courts The circuit court system is composed of 69 circuits, with 66 circuits serving a single county, and three circuits serving two counties each. Vernon Wallace Thomson
Vernon Wallace Thomson (November 5, 1905 – April 2, 1988) was an American attorney and politician who served as the 34th Governor of Wisconsin from 1957 to 1959. Early life and education Vernon Thomson was born in Richland Center, Wisconsin. He attended what is now Carroll University, in 1925, but graduated from what is now the University of Wisconsin–Madison, in 1927, where he was a member of the Chi Phi Fraternity. In 1932, he received his law degree and practiced law. Career Thomson became involved in the Republican Party. He was mayor of Richland Center from 1944 to 1951 and a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly from 1935 to 1951, and served as Speaker of the Assembly from 1939 to 1945. He served as Attorney General of Wisconsin from 1951 to 1957. The ''La Crosse Tribune'' is a daily newspaper published in La Crosse, Wisconsin, covering the tri-state area of Wisconsin, Iowa, and Minnesota in the United States. The paper was first founded in 1904, following a media scandal in which existing publications failed to report on the recent creation of a power monopoly in La Crosse.
