Eubanksia
''Banksia'' sect. ''Eubanksia'' is an obsolete section of ''Banksia''. There have been two circumscriptions, one of which is synonymous with the recently abandoned ''B.'' subg. ''Banksia'' ''sensu'' Alex George, the other having no modern equivalent. The name ''Eubanksia'' was first published without rank by Stephan Endlicher in 1847. He published it as a replacement name for Robert Brown's ''Banksia verae'', the "true banksias". In Brown's taxonomic arrangement of ''Banksia'', ''Banksia verae'' was defined as comprising all species with a typical ''Banksia'' flower spike, and thus contained all known species except '' B. ilicifolia'' (Holly-leaved Banksia), which was unusual in having domed flower heads. Brown's circumscription of ''Banksia verae'' was retained for ''Eubanksia'' by Endlicher, and again by Carl Meissner, who gave ''Eubanksia'' sectional rank in his 1856 arrangement. Banksia Verae
''Banksia'' subg. ''Banksia'' is a valid botanic name for a subgenus of ''Banksia''. As an autonym (botany), autonym, it necessarily contains the type species of ''Banksia'', ''Banksia serrata, B. serrata'' (Saw Banksia). Within this constraint, however, there have been various circumscriptions. ''Banksia verae'' ''B.'' subg. ''Banksia'' can be traced back to ''Banksia verae'', an unranked taxon published by Robert Brown (botanist, born 1773), Robert Brown in his 1810 ''Prodromus Florae Novae Hollandiae et Insulae Van Diemen''. Under Brown's taxonomic arrangement of Banksia, Brown's arrangement, ''Banksia'' was divided into two groups based on inflorescence shape. A substantial improvement on the previous arrangement, it would stand for over a century. Carl Meissner's taxonomic arrangement of ''Banksia'' was published in 1856, as part of his chapter on the Proteaceae in A. P. de Candolle's ''Prodromus systematis naturalis regni vegetabilis''. ''Banksia dentata'', commonly known as the tropical banksia, is a species of tree in the genus ''Banksia''. It occurs across northern Australia, southern New Guinea and the Aru Islands. Growing as a gnarled tree to high, it has large green leaves up to long with dentate (toothed) margins. The cylindrical yellow inflorescences (flower spikes), up to high, appear over the cooler months, attracting various species of honeyeaters, sunbirds, the sugar glider and a variety of insects. ''Banksia marginata'', commonly known as the silver banksia, is a species of tree or woody shrub in the plant genus ''Banksia'' found throughout much of southeastern Australia. It ranges from the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia to north of Armidale, New South Wales, and across Tasmania and the islands of Bass Strait. It grows in various habitats, including ''Eucalyptus'' forest, scrub, heathland and moorland. ''Banksia marginata'' varies widely in habit, ranging from a shrub to a tree. In botanical nomenclature, autonyms are automatically created names, as regulated by the ''International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants'' that are created for certain subdivisions of genera and species, those that include the type of the genus or species.
