This article discusses the etymology of the word ''hippie''. History According to lexicographer Jesse Sheidlower, the terms ''hipster'' and ''hippie'' derive from the word ''hip'' and the synonym ''hep'', whose origins are disputed.. The words ''hip'' and ''hep'' first surfaced in slang around the beginning of the 20th century and spread quickly, making their first appearance in the ''Oxford English Dictionary'' in 1904. Kenneth Rexroth
Kenneth Charles Marion Rexroth (1905–1982) was an American poet, translator, and critical essayist. He is regarded as a central figure in the San Francisco Renaissance, and paved the groundwork for the movement. Although he did not consider himself to be a Beat poet, and disliked the association, he was dubbed the "Father of the Beats" by ''Time'' magazine. How To Speak Hip
''How to Speak Hip'' is a comedy album by Del Close and John Brent, released by Mercury Records in 1959. Description The album is designed as a satire of language-learning records, where the secret language of the ' hipster' is treated as a foreign language. Part of the joke, however, is that it actually does a good job of describing the Beat Generation/Beatnik sub-culture: Basic concepts such as "cool" and "uncool" are taught, as well as vocabulary building ("dig", "dig it", "dig yourself, baby", "dig the chick", "dig the cat", "What a drag!"). Many of the phrases and expressions survived to become elements of the counterculture vocabulary. Social notes are presented as for many language courses, and later in the album, the teacher (Close) is taken on field trips into the secret life of the hipster (Brent). Robert Lee "Chan" Romero (born July 7, 1941) is an American rock and roll performer, best known for his 1959 song, "Hippy Hippy Shake". Life and career Romero was born in Billings, Montana. His father was of Spanish and Apache descent, while his mother was a mixture of Mexicans, Mexican, Cherokee and Irish. Both had migrated to Montana during the Great Depression, seeking employment as migrant farm workers. The nickname "Chan" was bestowed on Romero by his grandfather. Since Romero often ran around without footwear, the nickname, from a Spanish phrase meaning "little boy with pig's feet" seemed appropriate.
