Ethiopian Golden Age Of Music
The Ethiopian Golden Age of Music was an era of Ethiopian music that began around 1960s to 1970s, until the Derg regime progressively falter its existence through politically motivated persecution and retribution against musicians and companies, which left many self-imposed exile to North America and Europe. Several artists and musical companies as well as recording groups emerged to produce their own singles and albums, the first being Amha Records, and Philips Records, Ethiopia Records and Kaifa Records, which primarily based in Addis Ababa. The musical era involved a blend of traditional and folk genre as well as soul and funk. Central innovation was the "Ethio-jazz" music and musicians Alemayehu Eshete, Tilahun Gessesse, Mahmoud Ahmed, Mulatu Astatke and others were prominent in this era. Ethiopian music is a term that can mean any music of Ethiopian origin, however, often it is applied to a genre, a distinct modal system that is pentatonic, with characteristically long intervals between some notes. The music of the Ethiopian Highlands uses a fundamental modal system called ''qenet'', of which there are four main modes: , , , and . Éthiopiques
''Éthiopiques'' is a series of compact discs featuring Music of Ethiopia, Ethiopian singers and musicians. Many of the CDs compile songs from various singles and albums that Amha Records, Kaifa Records and Philips, Philips-Ethiopia released during the 1960s and 1970s in Ethiopia. Prominent singers and musicians from this era appearing on ''Éthiopiques'' releases include Alemayehu Eshete, Asnaketch Worku, Mahmoud Ahmed, Mulatu Astatke and Tilahun Gessesse. However, some other releases contain new recordings. Overview The Paris-based world music record label Buda Musique began the ''Éthiopiques'' series in 1997 and initially compiled Ethiopian popular music releases from the 1960s and 1970s. Debo Band
Debo Band (also known simply as Debo) are a Boston-based Ethiopian music band led by saxophonist Danny Mekonnen and fronted by vocalist Bruck Tesfaye. Ranging from 10–12 members playing horns, guitars, violins, percussion, and accordion, their sound incorporates Ethiojazz, folk, and pop styles from the Horn of Africa infused with tinges of motifs from Eastern Europe and Asia, as well as punk, experimental, and psychedelic rock. Tizita
Tizita/Tezeta/tazata ( am, ትዝታ; en, memory, "nostalgia" or "longing") is one of the Pentatonic scales or Qañat of the Amhara ethnic group. Etymology and origin The term ''tizita'' is distinctly Amharic, there's no Geez equivalent, contrarily to the term ''nafkot'' which belong to both languages with the same meaning (regret, emotion linked to a remembrance). Tizita folk songs developed in the countryside by the Amhara peasantry and the village musicians called the Azmaris. Tizita music genre Tizita songs are a popular music genre in Ethiopia and Eritrea. Getatchew Mekurya
Getatchew Mekurya (Amharic: ጌታቸው መኩሪያ ወልደ ተክሌ; 14 March 1935 – 4 April 2016) was an Ethiopian jazz saxophonist. Early career Mekurya was born on 14 March 1935, in Yifat, Ethiopia. His father was a honey merchant. Young Getatchew played traditionel Ethiopian instruments such as the washint flute, the krar and the masenqo, and later moved on to the saxophone and clarinet. At age 13, he began his professional career in 1949 as a part of the Municipality Band in Addis Ababa. In 1955 he joined the house band at Addis' Haile Selassie I Theatre, and in 1965 joined the famous Police Orchestra. He was also one of the first musicians to record an instrumental version of ''shellela'', a genre of traditional Amhara vocal music sung by warriors before going into battle.
