Ethics Commissioner (Canada)
The Conflict of Interest and Ethics Commissioner of Canada is an entity of the Parliament of Canada. The commissioner is an independent officer of Parliament, who administers the ''Conflict of Interest Act'' and the ''Conflict of Interest Code for Members of the House of Commons'' and is supported in this role by the Office of the Conflict of Interest and Ethics Commissioner. The position came into effect on July 9, 2007, with the coming into force of the ''Conflict of Interest Act''. This act, in turn, was enacted as part of the ''Federal Accountability Act''. The current commissioner is Mario Dion, having served in the role since January 9, 2018, for a seven-year term. The previous commissioner was Mary Dawson. Mario Dion
Mario Dion (born 1956) is a Canadian public servant who currently serves as the second conflict of interest and ethics commissioner of Canada. He was appointed on January 9, 2018, succeeding Mary Dawson to a seven-year term. Early life and education Dion was born in Montreal. In 1979, Dion received a law degree from the University of Ottawa. Career Dion began his legal career as a legal advisor in the Department of the Solicitor General (now Public Safety Canada) in 1980. In 1988, he was appointed an assistant deputy minister at Corrections Canada. He moved on to serve in the Department of Justice, in an assistant deputy minister, then associate deputy minister position. Dion also served in the Privy Council Office as deputy clerk and counsel from 1996 to 1997, and at the Department of Indian and Northern Affairs in 2003. Tony Valeri (born August 11, 1957) is a former Canadian politician. Valeri was the Government House Leader in Paul Martin's government from 2004 until 2006. He was narrowly defeated by New Democratic (NDP) candidate Wayne Marston in the 2006 general election held on January 23, 2006. Biography Valeri grew up in Hamilton's north-end in the working class Barton and Sherman neighbourhood, the son of Italian immigrants Enzo and Maria Valeri, who arrived in Hamilton in the early 1950s. The WE Charity scandal was a Canadian political scandal regarding the awarding of a federal contract to WE Charity to administer the $912 million Canada Student Summer Grant program (CSSG) in 2020. The controversy arose when it was revealed that the WE charity had previously paid close family of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to appear at its events, despite making claims to the contrary. In total, Craig Kielburger confirmed at a parliamentary committee, WE Charity paid approximately $425,000 to Trudeau's family including expenses.WE Charity also used pictures of Trudeau's family members as celebrity endorsements in their application. Jody Wilson-Raybould (born March 23, 1971), also known by her initials JWR and by her Kwak’wala name Puglaas, is a Canadian lawyer and former politician who served as the member of Parliament (MP) for the British Columbia (BC) riding of Vancouver Granville from 2015 to 2021. The SNC-Lavalin affair () was a political scandal involving attempted political interference with the justice system by the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, and the Prime Minister's Office (PMO). The Parliament of Canada's Ethics Commissioner Mario Dion found that Trudeau improperly influenced then Minister of Justice and Attorney General Jody Wilson-Raybould to intervene in an ongoing criminal case against Quebec-based construction company SNC-Lavalin by offering a deferred prosecution agreement.
