Eternal Flame (Azerbaijan)
Eternal Flame is a monument that was established for the Azerbaijanis who died during Black January. The monument is situated in Martyrs’ Line, Baku. Every year Azerbaijanis commemorate Black January in that place. History The initial idea for the establishment of the monument for martyrs originated in 1994. Heydar Aliyev was the initiator of the project and created the special commission for this issue. Two projects were presented to the president in the annual commemoration. One of the projects was presented by the sculptor Omer Eldarov. During these years the economic conditions were severe in the country and the main requirement for the monument was low cost. These two projects did not meet that requirement and so the project was delayed. Over the next years, new ideas were offered and the project created by the company led by sculptor Elbay Gasimzadeh won. Black January
Black January ( az, Qara Yanvar), also known as Black Saturday or the January Massacre, was a violent crackdown on the civilian population of Baku on 19–20 January 1990, as part of a state of emergency during the dissolution of the Soviet Union. General Secretary of the Soviet Communist Party Mikhail Gorbachev and Defence Minister Dmitry Yazov asserted that military law was necessary to thwart efforts by the Azerbaijani independence movement to overthrow the Soviet Azerbaijani government. According to official estimates of Azerbaijan, 147 civilians were killed, 800 people were injured, and five people went missing. Martyrs' Lane
Martyrs' Lane or Alley of Martyrs ( az, Şəhidlər Xiyabanı), formerly known as the Kirov Park, is a cemetery and memorial in Baku, Azerbaijan dedicated to those killed by the Soviet Army during Black January 1990 and in the First Nagorno-Karabakh War of 1988–1994. History In the closing days of World War I, fighting broke out in Baku as a result of the Russian Civil War, with four groups fighting for control of the area when the Russian Empire collapsed. Fighting each other were the Bolsheviks, Mensheviks, Armenians and Azeris. Many people were killed in the fighting including some from a small British force sent to prevent Baku falling into the hands of the Russians. Omar Hasan oglu Eldarov ( az, Ömər Həsən oğlu Eldarov) is an Azerbaijani monumentalist sculptor, Honoured Art Worker of Azerbaijan (1962), People's Artist of Azerbaijan (1982), full member of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan (2001), full member of the Russian Academy of Arts (1988), president of Azerbaijan State Academy of Fine Arts (2001), and academician. Baku Turkish Martyrs' Memorial
The Baku Turkish Martyrs' Memorial ( az, Bakı Türk Şəhidliyi, tr, Bakü Türk Şehitleri Anıtı) is a memorial dedicated to the Ottoman soldiers killed during the World War I in Azerbaijan. It is situated within the Martyrs' Lane ( az, Şəhidlər Xiyabanı) in Baku. It consists of a monument, an alley with name plates of the martyrs and a mosque. 1,130 Turkish soldiers and officers of the Army of Islam were killed in action in the Battle of Baku of Caucasus Campaign, who fought alongside the Azerbaijani forces against the Bolsheviks– Armenian Dashnaks and Baku Soviets in 1918. The monument was designed by Turkish architects Hüseyin Bütüner and Hilmi Güner in the form of a two-story pyramidal frustum with square bases, of which truncated corners are carved out so that it appears as a sort of octagonal frustum.
