The Estonian Institute of Zoology and Botany ( Estonian: ''Zooloogia ja Botaanika Instituut'') (ZBI) was a zoological and botanical research institute based in Tartu, Estonia. It was founded in 1947. Since 1997, it belonged to the Estonian University of Life Sciences as a central biological research institute in the country. On January 1, 2005 it was merged into the Institute of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. The Institute of Zoology and Botany was the only research unit in Estonia to administer and distribute data and expertise on taxonomic composition in the country. It provided data on the country's flora, microevolution of vegetation, naturalisation, the invasion of non-native species and vegetation population dynamics. The Estonian University of Life Sciences ( Estonian: ''Eesti Maaülikool'', EMÜ) located in Tartu, Estonia, is the former Estonian Agricultural University, which was established in 1951 and renamed and restructured in November 2005. Eesti Maaülikool is, by its own claim, the only university in Estonia whose priorities in academic and research activities provide the sustainable development of natural resources necessary for the existence of Man as well as the preservation of heritage and habitat. Eerik Kumari
Eerik Kumari born Erik Mathias Sits (7 March 1912 – 8 January 1984) was a biologist, and pioneer of ornithology and nature conservation in Estonia. He was born in Kirbla, Lihula Parish. Urmas Tartes is an Estonian biologist and nature photographer. Life and work Tartes ended his studies in Nõo Secondary school in 1982 with a gold medal and graduated from University of Tartu in 1989 with ''cum laude'' as biologist-zoologist. He became Doctor of Philosophy in 1995 with a thesis "Respiration Rhythms in Insects". Since 1989 he worked in Estonian Institute of Zoology and Botany. Harald Haberman (19 December 1904 Tallinn – 16 December 1986 Tartu) was an Estonian entomologist and politician. In 1932 Haberman graduated from University of Tartu in biology. From 1935 to 1937 he was the chief editor of the journal ''Eesti Loodus''. In 1940 he was assistant of the internal minister in Johannes Vares' cabinet. Haide-Ene Rebassoo (25 January 1935, Tallinn – 27 December 2018) was an Estonian botanist who specialized in the flora of Hiiumaa island. Life and work She graduated from Tartu State University in 1958 as a botanist with a thesis about the flora of Hiiumaa (the second largest island of Estonia) and its genesis. In Leningrad (now St. Petersburg, Russia), Rebassoo defended her doctoral thesis in 1988, which was based on the paper "Biocenoses of the islands of the eastern part of the Baltic Sea, their composition, classification and protection" published in 1987 in Estonian and Russian. She was affiliated with the Estonian Institute of Zoology and Botany in Tartu from 1960 to 1979 and from 1983 to 1993. Erast Parmasto
Erast Parmasto (28 October 1928 – 24 April 2012) was a noted Estonian mycologist, bioscientist and botanist and onetime director of the Estonian Institute of Zoology and Botany. Parmasto was born in Nõmme. He became a member of the Estonian Institute of Zoology and Botany in 1950 and served as its director from 1985 to 1990. His establishment of a mushroom herbarium in 1950 has since seen recognition of 160,000 samples, 37,000 of which Parmasto himself collected. Parmasto published more than 150 papers and 200 articles during his academic career and his works are commonly used in popular scientific and academic journals in Estonia. His expertise in the field of mycology has resulted in him being nicknamed "Seenevana", or the "grand old man of mushrooms".
