Estonian Encyclopedia
"Estonian Encyclopaedia" ( et, Eesti entsüklopeedia) is Estonian encyclopaedia which was published in 1985-2007. From 1985 to 1990 its title was "Eesti nõukogude entsüklopeedia" (abbreviated ENE; in English: 'Estonian Soviet Encyclopaedia') and thereafter its title was "Eesti entsüklopeedia" (abbreviated EE). In 2010 were started digitalization of the encyclopaedia. Editors-in-chief were as follows: *Gustav Naan (1985-1989, editions I-IV), *Ülo Kaevats (1989-1992), *Toomas Varrak (1992-1995), *Ülo Kaevats (1995-2002; second time) *Hardo Aasmäe (2002-2007). Editors-in-chief
An editor-in-chief (EIC), also known as lead editor or chief editor, is a publication's editorial leader who has final responsibility for its operations and policies. The highest-ranking editor of a publication may also be titled editor, managing editor, or executive editor, but where these titles are held while someone else is editor-in-chief, the editor-in-chief outranks the others. Description The editor-in-chief heads all departments of the organization and is held accountable for delegating tasks to staff members and managing them. The term is often used at newspapers, magazines, yearbooks, and television news programs. The editor-in-chief is commonly the link between the publisher or proprietor and the editorial staff. The term is also applied to academic journals, where the editor-in-chief gives the ultimate decision whether a submitted manuscript will be published. Gustav Naan
Gustav Naan (russian: Густав Иоганнович Наан, ''Gustav Iogannovich Naan''; 17 May 1919 near Vladivostok – 12 January 1994 in Tallinn) was an Estonian physicist and philosopher. According to the Estonian Encyclopedia's definition, he "wrote plenty of irritating publicist articles". Gustav Naan was born in Russian SFSR in a village near Vladivostok to a family of Estonian settlers. He graduated from the Leningrad State University in 1941. He took part in World War II and joined the CPSU in 1943. Having settled to Estonia after the USSR annexed Estonia, Gustav Naan, a loyal communist and graduate of the Higher Party School of the AUCP(b) (1946) published a number of Stalinist-oriented polemic pieces (treating Estonian history and politics from the pro-Soviet perspective, e.g. "Eesti kodanlike natsionalistide ideoloogia reaktsiooniline olemus″ ('The Reactionary Essence of the Ideology of Estonian Bourgeois Nationalists'), 1947). Ülo Kaevats
Ülo Kaevats (29 September 1947 – 30 January 2015) was an Estonian statesman, academic and philosopher. In 1972, he graduated from the Faculty of Physics and Chemistry of the University of Tartu with a qualification from a physicist and a research philosopher. Kaevats obtained a PhD from Vilnius State University in Lithuania. He served for many years (1989–1992, 1995–2000) as editor-in-chief of the Estonian Encyclopaedia, the main national work of reference; earlier, he worked as a research fellow at the Estonian and the USSR Academies of Sciences, mostly in the History of Science field. Until 2011, when he became emeritus, he was professor and chair of philosophy at Tallinn University of Technology (TUT). Hardo Aasmäe
Hardo Aasmäe (11 February 1951 – 2 December 2014) was an Estonian geographer, entrepreneur and politician. He was active in the Estonian People's Front, and was the first post-Soviet mayor of Tallinn Tallinn () is the most populous and capital city of Estonia. Situated on a bay in north Estonia, on the shore of the Gulf of Finland of the Baltic Sea, Tallinn has a population of 437,811 (as of 2022) and administratively lies in the Harju '' ..., from 1990 to 1992. He was for many years the editor-in-chief of the Estonian Encyclopaedia. Aasmäe produced many radio shows and was a member of ''Tarkade klubi'', an Estonian question-and-answer radio programme, for many years. He was a member of Club of Rome Estonian section. Death On 2 December 2014, Aasmäe died following an accidental fall down a staircase from the third floor of his office at the Estonian Encyclopedia publishing house in Tallinn.
