''Shortland Street'' is a New Zealand prime-time soap opera centring on the fictitious Shortland Street Hospital, first broadcast on TVNZ 2 on 25 May 1992. It is New Zealand's longest-running drama and soap opera, being broadcast continuously for over 7,500 episodes and 30 years, and is one of the most watched television programmes in New Zealand. The show was originally screened as five half-hour episodes each week and initially receiving mixed reviews on its premiere. After its launch, it dropped in ratings and would have been cancelled if TVNZ had not ordered a year's worth of episodes in advance. TVNZ renewed the production in early 1993 when the show's rating had picked up, and it now has "long-term public enthusiasm". Kane Jenkins is a fictional character on the New Zealand soap opera ''Shortland Street''. He was portrayed by KJ Apa from late-2013 to mid-2015. The character was introduced as part of the extended Cooper family unit and as a means to depict youth-suicide. Creation and casting Often known to depict topical and ethical issues of the day, in 2013 ''Shortland Street'' producers decided to undergo a storyline that would reflect the high rates of youth suicide in New Zealand. They wrote the role of Kane, the teenage brother of Dayna Jenkins. Reuben Milner auditioned for the role but was instead cast as Kane's best friend Jack. Harry Warner (previously Thompson-Warner) is a fictional character on the New Zealand soap opera ''Shortland Street'' who first appeared onscreen in May 2002. Being born on screen during the shows 10th anniversary, Harry has been portrayed by several child actors and by Reid Walker since 2009. In May 2017 Harry left for an exchange program in Japan. Portrayed by Reuben Milner since 2014 in what was originally a 4-episode stint, the character became a regular character in the following years and had a family unit written around him.
