Esther Ngumbi
Esther Ndumi Ngumbi is a Kenyan entomologist and academic who is currently Assistant Professor of Entomology and African-American Studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign. She was awarded the 2018 Society for Experimental Biology Presidential Award. Early life and education Esther Ngumbi grew up in Kwale County, a rural farming community in Kenya. She was introduced to farming at the age of seven, when her parents gave her a strip of land to cultivate cabbages. As a child she became aware of the challenges that farmers faced, including drought and bad soils. The first time she left her village was to attend Kenyatta University, where she earned her Bachelor's and Master's degrees. In 2007 she was awarded an American Association of University Women (AAUW) International Fellowship that allowed her to complete a doctoral degree in entomology at Auburn University. The Moth is a non-profit group based in New York City dedicated to the art and craft of storytelling. Jomo Kenyatta (22 August 1978) was a Kenyan anti-colonialism, colonial activist and politician who governed Kenya as its Prime Minister of Kenya, Prime Minister from 1963 to 1964 and then as its first President of Kenya, President from 1964 to his death in 1978. He was the country's first indigenous head of government and played a significant role in the transformation of Kenya from Kenya Colony, a colony of the British Empire into an independent republic. Ideologically an African nationalist and conservative, he led the Kenya African National Union (KANU) party from 1961 until his death. The Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) is an initiative of the United States Department of State. It was begun in 2010 by President Barack Obama. YALI is a programme aimed at educating and networking young African leaders with activities including the Mandela Washington Fellowship that brings them to study in the United States for six weeks, with follow-up resources, and student exchange programs.
