Estarreja ( or ) is a municipality in Portugal. The population in 2011 was 26,997, in an area of 108.17 km2. It had 22,746 eligible voters in 2006. The only city in the municipality is Estarreja, which is in the urban parish of Beduido. The city itself has a population of approximately 7,000. It is built along the banks of the Antuã River, near the Ria de Aveiro. Estarreja is an important chemical industry centre, being the place where several industrial facilities of CUF are located. The municipality is part of the Aveiro District, in the Baixo Vouga subregion, in the Centro Region, Portugal. Main train stations are Estarreja and Avanca. The present Mayor is Diamantino Sabina, elected by a coalition between the Social Democratic Party and the People's Party. The municipal holiday is 13 June, the feast of Saint Anthony of Padua. Avanca
Avanca is a civil parish in the municipality of Estarreja, in the central subregion of Baixo Vouga. The population in 2011 was 6,189, in an area of 21.07 km2. History During the mid 18th century Avanca was divided in three separate municipalities: Estarreja, Feira and Bemposta, all part of the province of Beira Baixa and the comarca of Esgueira. Geography The parish of Avanca is situated in the municipality of Estarreja, in the historic district of Aveiro. One of the seven parishes of this municipality, it occupied a territory of 2300 hectares, an area almost rectangular in shape. The territory is bisected by the ''Linha Norte'' railway, whose segment (the Aveiro-Porto link) was inaugurated on 7 July 1865. António Caetano de Abreu Freire Egas Moniz (29 November 1874 – 13 December 1955), known as Egas Moniz (), was a Portuguese neurologist and the developer of cerebral angiography. He is regarded as one of the founders of modern psychosurgery, having developed the surgical procedure ''leucotomy''better known today as ''lobotomy''for which he became the first Portuguese national to receive a Nobel Prize in 1949 (shared with Walter Rudolf Hess). He held academic positions, wrote many medical articles and also served in several legislative and diplomatic posts in the Portuguese government. In 1911, he became professor of neurology in Lisbon until his retirement in 1944. Early life and training Moniz was born in Avanca, Estarreja, Portugal, as António Caetano de Abreu Freire de Resende. Antuã () is a Portugal, Portuguese river, located in the Aveiro District, Aveiro region. It is the most important tributary of the Ria de Aveiro after the Vouga River. Its name is linked to the former name of Estarreja: Antuão or Anterão. It has its source between Romariz and Fajões, near S.
