Essae Martha Culver
Essae Martha Culver (November 15, 1882 – January 3, 1973) was an American librarian, the first state librarian of Louisiana and president of the American Library Association. Early life Culver was born in Emporia, Kansas to Joseph Franklin Culver and Mary Murphy Culver. She was the youngest in a family of four boys and four girls. She graduated from Pomona College in Claremont, California in 1905 with a major in piano and voice. Working in the college library led to an interest in librarianship. She attended the New York State Library School from 1907 to 1908 but left that program early to join the Public Library of Salem, Oregon. Library career Culver worked with rural libraries in Oregon for two years before accepting a job in California in 1914. Louisiana State University
Louisiana State University (officially Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College, commonly referred to as LSU) is a public land-grant research university in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The Southwestern Library Association (SWLA) was a professional organization for librarians and library workers based in the southwestern United States and in Mexico. It was headquartered in Stillwater, Oklahoma after being founded on October 26, 1922, in Austin, Texas. The organization was designed primarily to serve library associations and librarians in the states of Arizona, Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas. Elizabeth H. West, the State Librarian of Texas at the time, was the first president of SWLA. The Louisiana Library Association (LLA) is a professional organization for Louisiana's librarians and library workers. It is headquartered in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The LLA publishes ''The LLA Bulletin'' (est. 1937) and ''Louisiana Libraries'' magazine. It was originally founded in 1909, called the Louisiana State Library Association, after a call for a statewide library group from the New Orleans Library Club.
