Esquimalt was a provincial electoral district in the province of British Columbia, Canada. It was one of the province's first twelve ridings upon its entry into Confederation. It was originally a two-member riding. Its successor riding today is Esquimalt-Metchosin. An electoral district in Canada is a geographical constituency upon which Canada's representative democracy is based. It is officially known in Canadian French as a ''circonscription'' but frequently called a ''comté'' (county). 1886 British Columbia General Election
The 1886 British Columbia general election was held in 1886. The number of members was increased for this election from 25 to 27, and the number of ridings increased to 13. Each voter was allowed to cast as many votes as there were seats to fill in the district. The first Labour MLA in BC's history was elected in this election. 1912 British Columbia General Election
The 1912 British Columbia general election was the thirteenth general election for the Province of British Columbia, Canada. It was held to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia. The election was called on February 27, 1912, and held on March 28, 1912. The new legislature met for the first time on January 16, 1913. The governing Conservative Party increased its share of the popular vote to almost 60%, and swept all but 3 of the 42 seats in the legislature. Of the remaining three, one (Harold Ernest Forster in Columbia) was formally listed as an Independent but was a Conservative who had missed the filing date. Henry Dallas Helmcken
Henry Dallas "Harry" Helmcken (December 23, 1859 – July 6, 1912https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/98143353/henry-dallas-helmcken) was a lawyer and political figure in British Columbia. He represented Victoria City in the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia from 1894 to 1903. Biography Helmcken was born in 1859, the son of Cecilia Douglas and John Sebastian Helmcken. His mother was the daughter of Sir James Douglas, and his father was a physician. He was educated at the Nest Academy in Jedburgh, Scotland, the universities of Edinburgh and London and at Osgoode Hall. In 1895, he married Hannah Jane Goodwin, a widow. Helmcken was director of the Jubilee Hospital. 1909 British Columbia General Election
The 1909 British Columbia general election was the twelfth general election for the Province of British Columbia, Canada. It was held to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia. The election was called on October 20, 1909, and held on November 25, 1909. The new legislature met for the first time on January 20, 1910. The governing Conservative Party won its third consecutive term in government with over half of the popular vote and all but four of the 42 seats in the legislature, effectively a rout for the popular incumbent Premier, Sir Richard McBride. Despite winning almost one-third of the popular vote, the Liberal Party won only two seats, the same number won by the Socialist Party with only 11.5% of the vote. The 1907 British Columbia general election was the eleventh general election for the Province of British Columbia, Canada. It was held to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia. The election called on December 24, 1906, and held on February 2, 1907. The new legislature met for the first time on March 7, 1907. The governing Conservative party won a second term in government, with almost half the popular vote, and a majority of the seats in the legislature, increasing its number of seats by 4 to 26. The Liberal Party lost 4 seats in the legislature, despite winning about the same share of the popular vote that it had in the 1903 election. John Jardine (British Columbia Politician)
John Jardine (September 24, 1854 – October 15, 1937) was a Scotland, Scottish-born joiner, decorator and political figure in British Columbia. He represented Esquimalt (electoral district), Esquimalt from 1907 to 1912 in the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia as a British Columbia Liberal Party, Liberal. Biography He was born in Lockerbie, the son of John Jardine and Janet Montgomery, and educated in Lockerbie Academy, Dryfesdale. Jardine apprenticed as a house painter with his older brother Thomas for five years and then continued to work at that trade in Scotland for about three more years. He moved to St. Paul, Minnesota in 1880. In the same year, he married Jane King Stoddart. Jardine stayed in Minnesota until 1884, when he moved to Victoria, British Columbia.
