Espolin Gallery
The Espolin Gallery ( no, Galleri Espolin) is an art gallery in Storvågan near Kabelvåg in the municipality of Vågan, Norway. The gallery was established in 1992 to display the works of the artist Kaare Espolin Johnson. In addition to Espolin Johnson's works, the gallery also displays works by other artists. The gallery is now part of the SKREI Heritage Center (''SKREI Opplevelsessenter'') at Museum Nord. Architecture The building was designed by the architect Gisle Jakhelln. He took his inspiration from traditional Icelandic construction because Espolin Johnson had Icelandic ancestors. In June 2006, the gallery was expanded with a new wing measuring around . Kabelvåg
Kabelvåg is a village in Vågan Municipality in Nordland county, Norway. It is located on the southern shore of the island of Austvågøya in the Lofoten archipelago. Kabelvåg lies about to the southwest of the town of Svolvær, the administrative centre of Vågan municipality. The village has a population (2018) of 1,883 which gives the village a population density of . The village was founded as ''"Vågan"'' in the early 12th century by King Øystein Magnusson, who built a church and a fishermen's hostel there. Vågan ( sme, Vuogát) is a municipality in Nordland county, Norway. It is part of the traditional district of Lofoten. The administrative centre of the municipality is the town of Svolvær. Kaare Espolin Johnson
Kaare Espolin Johnson (March 7, 1907 – August 16, 1994) was a Norwegian artist and illustrator. Life and work Espolin Johnson was born at the Vasseng farm in Surnadal. In 1909, when he was two years old, his family moved to Vadsø, and then moved again to Bodø in 1919. In 1927, after spending some time in Horten, Espolin Johnson relocated to Oslo, where he studied at the Norwegian National Academy of Craft and Art Industry and Norwegian National Academy of Fine Arts under Axel Revold and Halfdan Strøm. There he developed a special layering and scraping technique using soot early on in almost exclusively black and white. He had poor eyesight, and this technique was very well suited for his limited vision. He debuted at the Autumn Exhibition in 1932 and soon started contributing illustrations to the magazine ''Arbeidermagasinet''. Museum Nord
Museum Nord is a Norwegian museum consortium for the northern part of Nordland county, including the districts of Lofoten, Vesterålen, and Ofoten. The museum is set up as a foundation and was established on December 13, 2002. It opened in 2004 and it is one of three museum consortia in Nordland; the other two are the Helgeland Museum and the Nordland Museum. The museum unit has about 53 permanent employees and 13 full-time-equivalent positions through the company Lofotr Næringsdrift AS, which is wholly owned by Museum Nord. Museum Nord's administration is located at Melbu in Hadsel (staff and archives) and Borg in Vestvågøy (business and marketing).
