Esperanza Beach
Esperanza Beach ( Spanish: ''Playa La Esperanza'') is a popular beach on the southern coast of Vieques in La Esperanza, Puerto Real. In comparison to other beaches in the island which are located far away from populated areas, this beach is located close to La Esperanza and it hosts a number of hotels, restaurants, food kiosks and stores. Esperanza Pier, located on the western part of the beach, is considered a landmark of Vieques. It is a very popular weekend destination for locals and visitors alike. Vieques (; ), officially Isla de Vieques, is an island and municipality of Puerto Rico, in the northeastern Caribbean, part of an island grouping sometimes known as the Spanish Virgin Islands. Esperanza is a ''comunidad'' in Puerto Real Barrio, on the south side of the island of Vieques, Puerto Rico. It was the location of Hacienda Casa del Frances, a historic site listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. Climate Due to the town's location inside the tropics, its low elevation, and its position in the Caribbean Sea, Esperanza experiences a Tropical rainforest climate (Köppen ''Af''). This results in a hot and wet climate throughout the year, with no significant change in temperature between seasons. Puerto Real is a barrio in the island-municipality of Vieques, Puerto Rico. Its population in 2010 was 1,654. History Puerto Rico was ceded by Spain in the aftermath of the Spanish–American War under the terms of the Treaty of Paris of 1898 and became an unincorporated territory of the United States. In 1899, the United States Department of War conducted a census of Puerto Rico finding that the population of Puerto Real barrio was 1,344. The Caribbean reef squid (''Sepioteuthis sepioidea''), commonly called the reef squid, is a species of small, torpedo-shaped squid with undulating fins that extend nearly the entire length of the body, approximately in length. Monte Pirata (Vieques)
Monte Pirata ( Spanish for "pirate mountain"), at 960 feet (290 m) of elevation, is the highest mountain in the island of Vieques. The mountain is located in the western portion of the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge and it is the site of an old US Navy communications site, now operated by the Department of Homeland Security]. Hiking used to be permitted in the mountain, and there is a trail (Mount Pirata Trail) leads to the summit. Although the main trail has been closed to the general public for the past 20 years, an observation platform is being installed and currently there is interest in revitalizing and reopening the entire area.
