Academia Nacional de Bellas Artes San Alejandro, is the oldest and most prestigious fine arts school in Cuba. It is also known as Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes "San Alejandro", Academia San Alejandro, or San Alejandro Academy. The school is located in Marianao, a suburb of Havana, and was founded in 1818 at the ''Convent of San Alejandro''. It is located today in a monumental building built in the early 1940s. Beginning The school was founded with the support of the Economic Society of Friends of the Country and the General Intendant of the Treasury and was founded under the direction of the French artist Jean Baptiste Vermay (1784–1833). Augusto Ferrán
Augusto Ferrán y Forniés (7 July 1835 in Madrid – 2 April 1880 in Madrid) was a Spanish poet of the Postromantic period. Biography Ferrán was born in Madrid on 7 July 1835 to well-to-do parents of Catalan and Aragonese descent. The family business was in manufacturing gilded moldings. His father went off to Havana to seek his fortune and Augusto began studying at the ''Instituto del Noviciado''. He travelled to Germany, passing through Paris, and there came in contact with the poetry of Heinrich Heine as well as Friedrich Schubert, Felix Mendelssohn and Robert Schumann. His mother died in 1859 and he returned to Madrid. Back at home, he founded a magazine, ''El Sábado'', with the aim of disseminating German lyric poetry. Víctor Manuel García Valdés
Víctor Manuel García Valdés (October 31, 1897–February 1, 1969) was a Cubans, Cuban painter. He was an early member of the "Vanguardia" movement of artists who, beginning in the 1920s, combined European concepts of Modern art with native Primitivism to create a distinctly Cuban aesthetic. Alicia Leal Veloz (born 15 November 1957) is a Cuban painter. She was born in Sancti Spíritus. Art Leal's work focuses on women and the relationship between women and men, and they are known for their flat perspective with intricate and narrative details. Juan Esnard Heydrich
Juan Esnard Heydrich (Matanzas 1917 – 1998) was a Cuban sculptor. His career took off in the 1970s with the new regime of Fidel Castro, who commissioned several monuments on the revolution and personalities of Cuban history. He studied at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes "San Alejandro", 1935 – 1940, and founded with Rafael Soriano, Manuel Rodulfo Tardo, Roberto Juan Diago Querol and José Felipe Nuñez the Provincial School of Fine Arts in Matanzas. Antonio Gattorno (born Havana, March 15, 1904 - died Acushnet, Massachusetts, 1980) was a Cuban painter. Agustín Fernández (16 April 1928 - 2 June 2006) was a Cuban painter, sculptor, and multimedia artist. Although he was born in Cuba, he spent the majority of his career outside of Cuba, and produced art in Havana, Paris, San Juan, Puerto Rico, San Juan, and New York City, New York. Antonia Eiriz Vázquez (1929–1995) was an influential Cuban painter whose work was known for its Expressionist qualities and was exhibited throughout Latin America during her life. Life and career She was born in Havana, Cuba in the neighborhood of Juanelo and was the youngest of six children. When she was young, she developed skills in sewing, knitting, and crafting.
