General Escobedo
General Escobedo, or simply Escobedo, is a city and municipality in Nuevo León, Mexico that is part of the Monterrey Metropolitan area. As of the census of 2005, the population was 295,131 in the city and 299,364 in the municipality. The municipality has an area of around 205 km² and shares borders to the south with San Nicolás de los Garza, Monterrey and Santa Catarina; to the north with Hidalgo and El Carmen; to the east with Apodaca and Salinas Victoria; and to the west with García. Escobedo is also the home of the Mexican Army's 7th Military Zone Army Base. Origin of the name The city was named after the General Mariano Escobedo. Escobedo was known as "Topo de los Ayala" and was under Monterrey's jurisdiction in 1830, it was until 1867 that it was separated from the San Nicolas de los Garza municipality under governor Jerónimo Treviño and was thus decreed on February 24, 1868 becoming the "Villa de Gral. Ernesto "Neto" Escobedo III ( ; , born July 4, 1996) is a Mexican-American professional tennis player who has won four ATP Challenger titles. Personal life Escobedo began playing tennis at the age of 4. Xóchitl Escobedo (born September 17, 1968) is a retired female tennis player from Mexico, who represented her native country at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea. She reached a career-high singles ranking on November 20, 1989, when she became ranked the number 284 in the world. Escobedo is married to former Olympian Eduardo Nava. Vicente Escobedo (born November 6, 1981) is an American professional boxer who competed from 2005 to 2013. As an amateur, he represented his country at the 2003 World Championships and the 2004 Summer Olympics. Amateur career As an amateur Escobedo boxed out of the Woodland Boxing Club. Marisela Escobedo Ortiz (June 12, 1958 – December 16, 2010) was a Mexican social activist from Juarez, Chihuahua, who was assassinated while protesting the 2008 murder of her daughter. Background Marisela Escobedo Ortiz's social activism began in 2008 in Ciudad Juárez following the murder of her 16-year-old daughter Rubí Frayre. Escobedo and her husband claimed that their daughter was murdered by Sergio Rafael Barraza Bocanegra. They managed to locate Barraza in Fresnillo, Zacatecas, where he was arrested and taken to Juarez where he confessed to the crime in court and told of the burial of the remains of Rubí. Barraza was however acquitted by judges for lack of evidence and was released, thereby generating a scandal that became known nationally and internationally. Mariano Antonio Guadalupe Escobedo de la Peña (16 January 1826 – 22 May 1902) was a Mexican Army general and Governor of Nuevo León. Early life Mariano Escobedo was born in San Pablo de los Labradores (which is today known as Galeana), Nuevo León on 16 January 1826. He was the youngest of six children born to Manuel Escobedo and Rita de la Peña. Military career In 1854 he defended from the liberal rows the Plan of Ayutla that ended the dictatorship of Antonio López de Santa Anna. He took part in the Battle of Puebla on 5 May 1862, in Puebla, where thanks to his bravery, was promoted to colonel of cavalry. Marcos Marcelo Escobedo (1784–1833) was a military commander in the Mexican War of Independence. He later became Mayor of Colotlán, Jalisco. Early life Marcos Escobedo was born in 1784, son of José Joaquín Escobedo, presumably, a descendant of the original Tlaxcaltec colonizers of the region. Military career In 1808, he held the title Second Lieutenant in the Spanish army and was governor of the Tlaxcala neighborhood. On November 1, 1808, he declared himself in favor of Mexico's independence from Spain, and along with a priest named Pablo José Calvillo and the indigenous garrisons of the region, put himself at the service of independence leader Miguel Hidalgo. Jesús Alfonso Huerta Escoboza (January 4, 1966 January 11, 2020) was a Mexican ''luchador enmascarado'', or masked professional wrestler, better known as La Parka (or La Parka II to distinguish him from the original La Parka) who worked for the Mexican professional wrestling promotion AAA from the mid-1990s until 2019. On January 11, 2020, Huerta died from complications arising from injuries that he sustained from a botched move during an October 2019 match.
