''Escape from Singapore'' is a 1973 Australian TV dramatised documentary about General Gordon Bennett and his escape from Singapore in World War II.Ed. John Power (director)
John Beresford Power (20 November 1930 – February 2016) was an Australian film and television director, who began his career as a journalist. Early life and journalism career Power was born in Maitland, New South Wales. His older brother was Dave Power, a long-distance runner who won medals at the Olympics and Commonwealth Games. After leaving school, he joined the ''Maitland Mercury'' as a cadet journalist, later moving to Sydney to work for ''The Daily Telegraph'' and ''The Daily Mirror''. He was a political journalist in Canberra at the time of the Australian Labor Party split of 1955, events which he would later cover in the documentary film ''Like a Summer Storm''. George Wallace Donald Crosby, Order of Australia, OAM (29 October 1924 – 3 December 1985) was an Australians, Australian actor of radio, stage, television and film, radio producer, stage manager, airman and trade unionist. John Meillon
John Meillon, ( ; 1 May 1934 – 11 August 1989), was an Australian character actor, known for many straight as well as comedy roles, he became most widely known internationally as Walter Reilly in the films ''Crocodile Dundee'' and ''Crocodile Dundee II''. He also voiced advertisements for Victoria Bitter beer. He appeared in several Australian New Wave films including ''Wake in Fright'' and ''The Cars That Ate Paris''. Biography Meillon was born in Mosman, New South Wales. His younger brother was director Bob Meillon (1943–2012). Meillon began his acting career at the age of eleven in the ABC's radio serial ''Stumpy'', and made his first stage appearance the following year. Martin Kevin Vaughan (5 June 1931 – October 2022) was an Australian stage, television and film actor and musician. Peter Gwynne
Peter Gwynne (1929 – 17 November 2011) was a New Zealand-born Australian television actor who was also known for voice-over work. Career Born in New Zealand, Gwynne was a well-recognised character actor, appearing in many of the significant television productions of the 1970s onwards, including ''Cop Shop'', '' Boney'', ''Division 4'', '' Homicide'', ''Matlock Police'', '' Flying Doctors'', ''Return to Eden'', '' A Country Practice'' and many more. Gordon Bennett (general)
Lieutenant General Henry Gordon Bennett, (15 April 1887 – 1 August 1962) was a senior Australian Army officer who served in both World War I and World War II. Despite highly decorated achievements during World War I, during which he commanded at both battalion and brigade level and became the youngest general in the Australian Army, Bennett is best remembered for his role in the Battle of Singapore in February 1942 in the Pacific War. As commander of the 8th Australian Division, he escaped while his men became prisoners of the Imperial Japanese Army. After this, Bennett's military career waned and, although he rose to command a corps, he never again commanded troops in battle. In 1945, his escape caused controversy and resulted in a Royal Commission and military enquiry. Both found that he had been unjustified in relinquishing his command.
