Escadrille 15
''Escadrille 15'' is one of the oldest units of the French Air Force, which was founded on 22 August 1912 at Reims, France, and is still active. History Escadrille 15 was originally equipped with Robert-Esnault-Pelleterie K 80 machines. When World War I erupted, the ''escadrille'' went into action. It moved bases 16 times during August and September 1914. On 7 October 1914, it was posted to ''X Armee'' of the French Army.Franks, Bailey 1992, p. 90. On 30 March 1915, it re-equipped with Morane-Saulnier L aircraft, becoming ''Escadrille MS 15''. In September 1915, it traded machines again, gaining Nieuport 11s and being renamed ''Escadrille N 15''. A roundel is a circular disc used as a symbol. Nieuport 17
The Nieuport 17 C.1 (or Nieuport XVII C.1 in contemporary sources) was a French sesquiplane fighter designed and manufactured by the Nieuport company during World War I. An improvement over the Nieuport 11, it was a little larger than earlier Nieuports and better adapted to the more powerful engine than the interim Nieuport 16. Aside from early examples, it had the new Alkan-Hamy synchronization gear, permitting the use of a fuselage-mounted synchronised Vickers gun firing through the propeller disc. At the time of its introduction in March 1916, the type's outstanding manoeuvrability and excellent rate of climb gave it a significant advantage over fighters on both sides and was described as "the best pursuit plane of the day". Sous Lieutenant Bernard Artigau (28 August 1894 – 3 May 1968) was a French World War I flying ace credited with twelve aerial victories. He later became an airline pilot in South America, and returned to serve his nation again in World War II. Early life Bernard Artigau was born in Licq-Athérey, France on 28 August 1894. 1916–1917 Artigau was living in Argentina when World War I started. He was called up to active duty on 26 May 1916, and assigned to the ''144eme Regiment d'Infanterie'' as an enlisted ''Soldat de 2e Classe''. An observation balloon is a type of balloon that is employed as an aerial platform for intelligence gathering and artillery spotting. Use of observation balloons began during the French Revolutionary Wars, reaching their zenith during World War I, and they continue in limited use today. Synonyms include espionage balloon, reconnaissance balloon, or surveillance balloon. Historically, observation balloons were filled with hydrogen. The balloons were fabric envelopes filled with hydrogen gas, whose flammable nature led to the destruction of hundreds of balloons on both sides.
