Erwin Chargaff
Erwin Chargaff (11 August 1905 – 20 June 2002) was an Austro-Hungarian-born American biochemist, writer, Bucovinian Jew who emigrated to the United States during the Nazi Germany, Nazi era, and professor of biochemistry at Columbia University medical school. He wrote a well-reviewed autobiography, ''Heraclitean Fire: Sketches from a Life Before Nature''. Early life Chargaff was born on 11 August 1905 to a Jewish family in Czernowitz, Duchy of Bukovina, Austria-Hungary, which is now Chernivtsi, Ukraine. At the outbreak of World War I, his family moved to Vienna, where he attended the Maximiliansgymnasium (now the Gymnasium Wasagasse). He then went on to the TU Wien, Vienna College of Technology (''Technische Hochschule Wien'') where he met his future wife Vera Broido. Erwin Isak Jacob Rosenthal (18 September 1904 – 1991), was a German-born British Hebrew scholar and orientalist. Early life Erwin Isak Jacob Rosenthal was born in Heilbronn, Germany, on 18 September 1904 into a Jewish family. He was educated at the University of Heidelberg, and the University of Berlin where he studied History, Arabic, and Aramaic, and published his dissertation in 1932, and then with Leo Baeck, Hanokh Albeck, and Ismar Elbogen. Career In 1933, Rosenthal and his wife left Nazi Germany and moved to London, where he was appointed as a part-time lecturer in Hebrew and North Semitic Epigraphy at University College London, then Manchester, and later Cambridge. Rosenthal became a Fellow of Pembroke College and a Reader in Oriental Studies at the University of Cambridge. Brandon Erwin (born November 22, 1975 in Denton, Texas) is a racecar driver who has raced in stock car and sprint car events. In 2001, he competed in 4 Indy Racing League contests for McCormack Motorsports. In 2003 he competed in the Indy Pro Series, finishing 11th in points with a best race result of 3rd in his first race. In 2005 he drove a winged sprint car in Texas and surrounding states. His current hometown race track is the Devils Bowl Motor Speedway dirt track in Mesquite, Texas. William Lindsey Erwin (December 2, 1914 – December 29, 2010) was an American film, stage and television actor and cartoonist with over 250 television and film credits. A veteran character actor, he is widely known for his 1993 Emmy Award-nominated performance on ''Seinfeld'', portraying the embittered, irascible retiree Sid Fields. He also made notable appearances on shows such as ''I Love Lucy'' and '' Star Trek: The Next Generation''. Alexander Erwin (born 17 January 1948) is a South African politician who was Minister of Public Enterprises from 29 April 2004 to 25 September 2008. Early life and education Alexander Erwin was born on 17 January 1948 in Cape Town to Dennis and Rosamund Erwin. Alec, as he became known, matriculated from Durban High School in 1965. He then went to study at the University of Natal and received a B.Econ. (Honours) degree in 1970. After receiving his degree he became a lecturer in the Department of Economics at the university between 1971 and 1978. Erwin Vandenbergh (; born 26 January 1959) is a Belgian retired football who played as a forward. Between 1979 and 1991, he finished six times topscorer of the Belgian First Division (a record as of 2020), with three clubs (the first three with Lierse, the following two with Anderlecht, and the last one with Gent). In 1980, he was European topscorer with 39 goals out of 34 games. As a Belgium national team regular, Vandenbergh scored a memorable victory goal against Argentina in the opening game of the 1982 World Cup in Spain. Erwin Teufel (born 4 September 1939, in Zimmern ob Rottweil) is a German politician of the CDU. Political career Teufel was the leader of the CDU parliamentary group in the Landtag of Baden-Württemberg from 1978 to 1991. Teufel was Minister President of Baden-Württemberg and chairman of the CDU state party group from 1991 to 2005, serving as President of the Bundesrat in 1996/97. Erwin Strittmatter (14 August 1912 – 31 January 1994) was a German writer. Strittmatter was one of the most famous writers in the GDR. Biography Strittmatter was born the son of a baker and foods wholesaler. Between 1924 and 1930 he attended the secondary school in Spremberg which has subsequently been named after him. His left his school early due to shortage of money, and at the age of 17 he started an apprenticeship as a baker. Later Strittmatter worked as baker, waiter, chauffeur, zookeeper and unskilled laborer. In 1940 he volunteered to the Waffen-SS but was rejected. Instead, in March 1941 he was drafted into the Ordnungspolizei in the ''SS-Polizei-Gebirgsjäger-Regiment 18'', which operated under the control of the Waffen-SS and which was involved in the deportation of Jews from Athens.
