Erpobdellidae
Erpobdellidae is a family of leeches. It is one of the four families belonging to the suborder Erpobdelliformes of the proboscisless leeches order, Arhynchobdellida. Their members have abandoned the blood feeding habits of their ancestors and are instead predators of aquatic invertebrates. The family previously contained seven genera, but Siddall (2002) synonymized five genera (''Croatobranchus'', ''Dina'', ''Mooreobdella'', ''Trocheta'' and ''Nephelopsis'') into the genus '' Erpobdella'' based on morphogenetic analysis, with the remaining genus ''Motobdella'' possibly a sister group and thus retained. This decision was not accepted by scientific community. The family currently contains 3 genera ''Erpobdella'', ''Dina'' and ''Motobdella''. The genus '' Mimobdella'' was also sometimes included within Erpobdellidae or Gastrostomobdellidae Gastrostomobdellidae is a family of annelids belonging to the order Arhynchobdellida. Erpobdella
''Erpobdella'' is a genus of leeches in the family (biology), family Erpobdellidae. Members of the genus have three or four pairs of eyes, but never have true jaws, and are typically long. All members do not feed on blood, but instead are predators of small aquatic invertebrates, which they often swallow whole. Species The genus includes species previously classified under the genera ''Croatobranchus'', ''Mooreobdella'', ''Trocheta'' and ''Nephelopsis''. These were synonymized into ''Erpobdella'' by Sidall (2002) after morphogenetic analysis. There are over 30 currently accepted species: * ''Erpobdella adani'' (Tessler, Siddall, & Oceguera-Figueroa, 2018) * ''Erpobdella anoculata'' (Moore, 1898) * ''Erpobdella bhatiai'' Nesemann, 2007 * ''Erpobdella borisi'' Chichocka et al., 2015 * ''Erpobdella bucera'' (Moore, 1953) * ''Erpobdella bykowski'' (Gedroyc, 1913) * ''Erpobdella concolor'' Annandale, 1913 * ''Erpobdella costata'' Sawyer & Shelley, 1976 * ''Erpobdella dubia'' (Moore & ...

Arhynchobdellida
Arhynchobdellida, the proboscisless leeches, are a monophyletic order of leeches. They are defined by the lack of the protrusible proboscis that defines their sister taxon, the Rhynchobdellida.Uttam, Suneha, and Seema Langer.Distribution and Identification key for species of freshwater leech genus Erpobdella Blainville, 1818 (Hirudinida: Arhynchobdellida: Erpobdelliformes: Erpobdellidae)."/ref> Arhynchobdellida is a diverse order, comprimising both aquatic and terrestrial, besides sanguivorous and predatory, leeches. The order is divided into two suborders, Erpobdelliformes and Hirudiniformes (sometimes also called the Pharyngobdelliformes and Gnathobdelliformes, respectively). Taxonomy Historically, the Arhynchobdellida were split into two orders, the Gnathobdellida and the Pharyngobdellida. The Gnathobdellida were jawed and carnivorous of parasitic while the Pharyngobdellida were jawless and carnivorous. Current taxonomy accepts the order Arhynchobdellida and divides into t ...

Leeches
Leeches are segmented parasitism, parasitic or Predation, predatory worms that comprise the Class (biology), subclass Hirudinea within the phylum Annelida. They are closely related to the Oligochaeta, oligochaetes, which include the earthworm, and like them have soft, muscular segmented bodies that can lengthen and contract. Both groups are hermaphrodites and have a clitellum, but leeches typically differ from the oligochaetes in having suckers at both ends and in having ring markings that do not correspond with their internal segmentation. The body is muscular and relatively solid, and the coelom, the spacious body cavity found in other annelids, is reduced to small channels. The majority of leeches live in freshwater habitats, while some species can be found in terrestrial or marine environments. The best-known species, such as the medicinal leech, ''Hirudo medicinalis'', are hematophagous, attaching themselves to a host with a sucker and feeding on blood, having first secr ...

Raphaël Blanchard
Raphaël Anatole Émile Blanchard (28 February 1857 – 7 February 1919) was a French physician and naturalist who was a pioneer of medical zoology, with studies on parasites ranging from protozoa to worms and insects. Blanchard was born in Saint-Christophe-sur-le-Nais. He was a great grand nephew of the balloonist and parachute inventor Jean Pierre Blanchard. He went to study medicine in Paris in 1874. He became interested in zoology and worked at the laboratory at the École des Hautes-Études where he became a histological preparator for Charles Robin and Georges Pouchet, the latter influencing him towards studies on experimental teratology (inducing mutations and malformations). He travelled around Europe in 1877 with a grant from the Paris City Council, studying embryology in Vienna and comparative anatomy in Bonn. He received another grant in 1880 to study the organization of universities and biological education across Europe. He wrote a dissertation on anesthesia induced by ...

Family (biology)
Family ( la, familia, plural ') is one of the eight major hierarchical taxonomic ranks in Linnaean taxonomy. It is classified between order and genus. A family may be divided into subfamilies, which are intermediate ranks between the ranks of family and genus. The official family names are Latin in origin; however, popular names are often used: for example, walnut trees and hickory trees belong to the family Juglandaceae, but that family is commonly referred to as the "walnut family". What belongs to a family—or if a described family should be recognized at all—are proposed and determined by practicing taxonomists. There are no hard rules for describing or recognizing a family, but in plants, they can be characterized on the basis of both vegetative and reproductive features of plant species. Taxonomists often take different positions about descriptions, and there may be no broad consensus across the scientific community for some time. The publishing of new data and opini ...

Suborder (biology)
Order ( la, ordo) is one of the eight major hierarchical taxonomic ranks in Linnaean taxonomy. It is classified between family and class. In biological classification, the order is a taxonomic rank used in the classification of organisms and recognized by the nomenclature codes. An immediately higher rank, superorder, is sometimes added directly above order, with suborder directly beneath order. An order can also be defined as a group of related families. What does and does not belong to each order is determined by a taxonomist, as is whether a particular order should be recognized at all. Often there is no exact agreement, with different taxonomists each taking a different position. There are no hard rules that a taxonomist needs to follow in describing or recognizing an order. Some taxa are accepted almost universally, while others are recognized only rarely. The name of an order is usually written with a capital letter. For some groups of organisms, their orders may follow ...
