Ernst Syberg
Ernst Axel Syberg (12 January 1906 – 17 August 1981) was a Danish painter who in the early 1930s associated with the artists' colony in northwestern Zealand known as the Odsherred Painters. From 1934, he was a member of Corner where he exhibited his work. Biography Son of the artists Fritz Syberg and Anna Syberg, Syberg was born in Kerteminde on the island of Funen. As an artist he was self-taught but he had graduated in law from Copenhagen University in 1931. Fritz Syberg
Christian Friedrich Wilhelm Heinrich Syberg, generally known as Fritz Syberg, (28 July 1862, Fåborg – 20 December 1939, Kerteminde) was a Danish painter and illustrator, one of the or Funen Painters (''Fynboerne'') living and working on the island of Funen. Biography Syberg, from a poor background in Fåborg, first served a house painter's apprenticeship under Syrak Hansen, the father of fellow artist Peter Hansen before attending the Copenhagen Technical School in 1882 where Holger Grønvold taught him drawing. After a short period at the Danish Academy (spring 1884), he attended the Kunstnernes Frie Studieskoler (1885–1891) where he was the first of the Fynboerne to study under Kristian Zahrtmann. Artists' Colony
An art colony, also known as an artists' colony, can be defined two ways. Its most liberal description refers to the organic congregation of artists in towns, villages and rural areas, often drawn by areas of natural beauty, the prior existence of other artists or art schools there, and a lower cost of living. More commonly, the term refers to the guest-host model of a mission-driven planned community, which administers a formal process for awarding artist residencies. In the latter case, a typical mission might include providing artists with the time, space and support to create; fostering community among artists; and providing arts education (lectures, workshops) to the public. Zealand

Odsherred Painters
Odsherred Painters ( da, Odsherredsmalerne) is a term applied to Danish artists from various periods with connections to Odsherred in the northwest of Zealand, Denmark. Some were born there while others settled in the area or painted there. While the term includes painters from the 19th century such as Johan Thomas Lundbye, Vilhelm Kyhn and Vilhelm Melbye, it is applied more specifically to the painters who created landscapes from 1930 to 1970 and who formed an artists' colony. They include Karl Bovin, Kaj Ejstrup, Viggo Rørup, Ellen Krause, Lauritz Hartz, Povl Christensen, Victor Brockdorff and Sigurd Swane. Corner Painters
The Corner painters in Denmark first came together in 1932 when they decided to hold an exhibition in a meeting hall inside an office building on the corner of Vester Voldgade and Studiestræde in the centre of Copenhagen. The group was soon referred to simply as Corner. Among its earlier members were Karl Bovin, Victor Brockdorff, Povl Christensen, Kaj Ejstrup, Lauritz Hartz, Alfred Simonsen, Viggo Rørup and Erik Raadal. Anna Syberg
Anna Louise Birgitte Syberg (7 January 1870 – 4 July 1914) was a Danish painter. Together with her husband Fritz Syberg, she was one of the Funen Painters (''Fynboerne'') who lived and worked on the island of Funen. She is remembered for her lively watercolours of flower arrangements. Biography Anna Syberg was born in Faaborg, Denmark. Her father was artist Peter Syrak Hansen (1833-1904). She was the sister of artist Peter Hansen (1868–1928). Anna Syberg attended the technical school in Faaborg after which she studied painting under Ludvig Brandstrup and Karl Jensen in Copenhagen. In 1882, she met Fritz Syberg who was serving an apprenticeship as a house painter with her father Peter Syrak Hansen. The two quickly fell for each other and after Anna had spent a period decorating porcelain at the Royal Copenhagen factory, they married in 1894 and set up home in the little village of Svanninge, just north of Faaborg. Funen
Funen ( da, Fyn, ), with an area of , is the third-largest island of Denmark, after Zealand and Vendsyssel-Thy. It is the 165th-largest island in the world. Karl Bovin
Karl (Kalle) Christian Bovin (1907–1985) was a Danish painter whose work focused on landscapes of Odsherred, a region in the north-west of Zealand. In the 1930s, he became a central member in the Odsherred Painters artists' colony and helped to found the Corner artists association. Biography Bovin was born in Frederikshavn, as the eldest son of a stone mason. From an early age, he was interested in art. In the 1920s, he cycled to the artists paradise Skagen in the north of Jutland to show his early works to Anna and Michael Ancher. At their encouragement, he attended the Royal Danish Academy of Art in Copenhagen from 1928 to 1931, where he studied under Sigurd Wandel and Aksel Jørgensen. During his time at school, he associated with a group of constructivists who relied on intuition and observation, but eventually expressed dissatisfaction with their approach to art. Alfred Simonsen
Alfred Simonsen (16 December 1906 – 12 April 1935) was a Danish painter who in the early 1930s became associated with the artists' colony in northwestern Zealand known as the Odsherred Painters. When he died at the early age of 27, he had only completed about 30 paintings and a few sketches. Biography The son of a gardener, Simonsen was born in Kølstrup, a little village near Kerteminde on the Danish island of Funen. He was given painting lessons by an Odense theatre painter from about 1920. From 1926 to 1932, he studied painting at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts under Ejnar Nielsen and Aksel Jørgensen. While there, he developed a friendship with Erik Raadal and Karl Bovin. His association with Ernst Syberg also brought him into contact with the Funen Painters, encouraging to paint scenes of the Funen countryside, especially around Korup and Svanninge. Den Frie Udstilling
Den Frie Udstilling ('The Free Exhibition') is a Danish artists' association, founded in 1891 by artists in protest against the admission requirements for the Kunsthal Charlottenborg. Modeled on the Salon des Refusés, it is Denmark's oldest association of artists. Now located on Copenhagen's Oslo Plads next to Østerport Station, it works as an arts centre, continuing to exhibit works created and selected by contemporary artists rather than those chosen by cultural authorities.
