A hypocorism ( or ; from Ancient Greek: (), from (), 'to call by pet names', sometimes also ''hypocoristic'') or pet name is a name used to show affection for a person. It may be a diminutive form of a person's name, such as ''Izzy'' for Isabel or ''Bob (given name), Bob'' for Robert, or it may be unrelated. In linguistics, the term can be used more specifically to refer to the morphological process by which the standard form of the word is transformed into a form denoting affection, or to words resulting from this process. Ernie Dodd
Ernest Henry Dodd (21 March 1880 – 11 September 1918) was a New Zealand rugby union player. A hooker, Dodd represented at a provincial level in 45 matches between 1901 and 1905, and appearing in the first ever Ranfurly Shield challenge in 1904. He made three appearances for the New Zealand national side: two games in 1901; and the test match against the touring Australian team at Tahuna Park, Dunedin, in 1905. Dodd enlisted for service with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force in February 1917, and rose to the rank of lance sergeant in the New Zealand Rifle Brigade. He was killed in action in France on 9 September 1918, and was buried at the Metz-en-Couture Metz-en-Couture is a commune in the Pas-de-Calais department in the Hauts-de-France region of France. Ernie DiGregorio
Ernest DiGregorio (born January 15, 1951), also known as "Ernie D.", is an American former professional basketball player. He was named NBA Rookie of the Year in the 1973–74 season and shares the NBA rookie record for assists in a single game with 25. Due to a severe knee injury suffered early in DiGregorio's professional career, he played only five NBA seasons. A 1973 NCAA All-American at Providence, DiGregorio was inducted into the College Basketball Hall of Fame in 2019. Ernie Davis
Ernest Davis (December 14, 1939 – May 18, 1963) was an American football player who won the Heisman Trophy in 1961 and was its first African-American recipient. Davis played college football for Syracuse University and was the first pick in the 1962 NFL Draft, where he was selected by the Washington Redskins, but was almost immediately traded to the Cleveland Browns. Davis was diagnosed with leukemia that same year, and died shortly after at age 23 without ever playing in a professional game. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1979 and was the subject of the 2008 film '' The Express: The Ernie Davis Story''. Early life Davis was born in New Salem, Pennsylvania. Ernie Danjean
Ernie Danjean (March 5, 1934 – June 19, 1995) was a linebacker in the National Football League and all-star in the Canadian Football League. After playing college football Auburn University, Danjean was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the nineteenth round of the 1957 NFL Draft and played that season with the team. He moved to the Canadian Football League in 1959, playing for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and being selected an All-Star on the strength of his 3 interceptions. He was traded to the Calgary Stampeders during the 1960 season when he played in only 3 games. But from 1961 to 1963, he played in 41 of 45 regular season games. In 1962, he had another interception and recovered 4 fumbles for a 9-6 team which lost the Western conference final. Ernie Cox
Ernest Cox (February 17, 1894 – February 26, 1962), was a Canadian football player in the Canadian Football League. Cox was born in Hamilton, Ontario. He played for eleven seasons for the Hamilton Tigers. Ernie Coombs
Ernest "Ernie" Arthur Coombs, CM (November 26, 1927 – September 18, 2001) was a US-born Canadian children's entertainer who starred in the Canadian television series ''Mr. Dressup''. His career began as an assistant puppeteer to Fred Rogers, joining him in Canada when his employer was invited to produce a variant of his local Pittsburgh show for CBC Television, '' The Children's Corner'' on a national series, '' Misterogers''. Eventually, when Rogers decided to return to the United States, Coombs chose to stay in Canada on his employer's recommendation, developing the children's show '' Butternut Square'' which later evolved into ''Mr. Dressup'', which went on to become a long-running and iconic presence in Canadian media.
