Ernesto (film)
''Ernesto'' is a 1979 film directed by Salvatore Samperi and starring Martin Halm. The movie is loosely based on Umberto Saba's novel of the same name. Plot In Trieste, Austria-Hungary (Italy after the end of World War I) in 1911, Ernesto ( Martin Halm) is a 17-year-old boy who lives with his widowed mother in the home of his violin-loving Jewish uncle and works in an office at a routine job. He espouses socialist views largely to cause his uncle distress. He discovers his homosexuality when he meets a stableboy (Michele Placido), who is not identified by name. They become infatuated with each other and have an intense sexual relationship, which develops against a realistic depiction of the social setting. Ernesto loses his job when his sexual behavior is discovered and reveals to his mother his same-sex relationship, which he continues to view as shameful. The Silver Bear for Best Actor (german: Silberner Bär/Bester Darsteller) was an award presented at the Berlin International Film Festival from 1956 to 2020. It was given to an actor who has delivered an outstanding performance and was chosen by the International Jury from the films in the Competition slate at the festival. The 29th Berlin International Film Festival was held from 20 February – 3 March 1979. The Golden Bear was awarded to the West German film ''David'' directed by Peter Lilienthal. Michael Cimino's ''The Deer Hunter'' was surrounded by controversy, as it was accused of racism, and several countries decided to withdraw their films from the festival in protest. Renato Salvatori
Renato Salvatori (20 March 1933 – 27 March 1988) was an Italian actor. Born in Seravezza, Province of Lucca, Salvatori began his career in his teens playing juvenile, romantic roles. After working with directors such as Luchino Visconti, Roberto Rossellini and Vittorio De Sica, he developed into one of Italy's strongest characters actors. He met French actress Annie Girardot on the set of the film ''Rocco and His Brothers'' (1960) and married her on 6 January 1962. They had a daughter, Giulia; later the couple separated but never divorced. Salvatori died in Rome of cirrhosis of the liver on March 27, 1988, seven days after his 55th birthday.
