Ernestine Hogan Basham Thurman
Ernestine Hogan Basham Thurman (1920–1987) was an American entomologist and researcher, focusing on mosquitoes and vector control. In 1951 she was the first woman sent by the United States to Thailand to establish a malaria control program. Education and personal life Thurman was born in Atkins, Arkansas, US in 1920. She graduated from the University of the Ozarks with a B. S. degree in 1941 while employed as the head of biology at a local secondary school. In 1958 she was awarded a Ph.D. by the University of Maryland related to her work on mosquitoes in Thailand. She met Deed C. Thurman through her work and later married him. They had two children together. He died of malaria and typhoid fever in 1953. In 1964 she married J. Clyde Swartzwelder. She died in 1987 and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery. The United States Public Health Service (USPHS or PHS) is a collection of agencies of the Department of Health and Human Services concerned with public health, containing nine out of the department's twelve operating divisions. The Assistant Secretary for Health oversees the PHS. The Public Health Service Commissioned Corps (PHSCC) is the federal uniformed service of the PHS, and is one of the eight uniformed services of the United States. PHS had its origins in the system of marine hospitals that originated in 1798. In 1871 these were consolidated into the Marine Hospital Service, and shortly afterwards the position of Surgeon General and the PHSCC were established. The National Defense Service Medal (NDSM) is a service award of the United States Armed Forces established by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1953. It is awarded to every member of the US Armed Forces who has served during any one of four specified periods of armed conflict or national emergency from June 27, 1950 through the present. Combat or "in theater" service is not a requirement for the award. History The National Defense Service Medal (NDSM) was first intended to be a "blanket campaign medal" awarded to service members who served honorably during a designated time period of when a "national emergency" had been declared during a time of war or conflict. Graduate Women in Science (GWIS), formerly known as Sigma Delta Epsilon Graduate Women in Science (SDE-GWIS), is an international organization for women in science, first established in 1921 at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, United States. The Medical Center of Louisiana at New Orleans (MCLNO) was the name of two teaching hospitals in New Orleans, Louisiana, United States. Both hospitals were part of the LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans, LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans commonly referred to as the LSU Medical School in New Orleans.
