Ernest Reginald Nickerson
Ernest Reginald Nickerson (September 27, 1876 – May 28, 1956) was a merchant and political figure in Nova Scotia, Canada. He represented Shelburne County in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1925 to 1928 as an Independent Conservative member. He was born in Shag Harbour, Shelburne County, Nova Scotia, the son of Thomas Nickerson and Mary Crowell. In 1901, Nickerson married Ada M. Reid. He served as a member of the municipal council for Barrington township. Nickerson was sergeant-at-arms for the provincial legislature from 1928 to 1933. He was a prominent member of the Sons of Temperance. Nickerson moved from Shag Harbour to Halifax in 1928. He was a salesman for gas and oil burners and an insurance agent there. He died in Halifax at the age of 79. Shelburne County, Nova Scotia
Shelburne County is a county in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia. History Shelburne County was founded in 1784 shortly following the influx of Loyalist settlers evacuated from the newly independent United States of America. It was originally named Port Roseway, until it became a very busy town and was considered to be the capital of Nova Scotia, in which the name was changed to Shelburne in an attempt to please Lord Shelburne, the British Prime Minister from 1782 to 1783. The boundaries of Shelburne County were established by Governor and Council on December 16, 1785. The first Loyalists arrived in May 1783. The Sons of Temperance was and is a brotherhood of men who promoted the temperance movement and mutual support. The group was founded in 1842 in New York City. It began spreading rapidly during the 1840s throughout the United States and parts of Canada. United States and Canada Membership The organization originally had a highly restricted membership. In order to become a member (called a “brother“), a man had to be nominated by an existing brother. Three other brothers would then investigate his life to determine if they thought he was worthy of membership. The Sons of Temperance required a two-dollar initiation fee, an amount equal to a week's wages of an ordinary worker. In addition, the weekly membership fee was six cents. A nova (plural novae or novas) is a transient astronomical event that causes the sudden appearance of a bright, apparently "new" star (hence the name "nova", which is Latin for "new") that slowly fades over weeks or months.
